Navagio Beach on Zakynthos is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Yet again this year, tourists can only view the beach, known as “Shipwreck Beach,” from a distance. The natural paradise is closed for the entire season.

Fine white sand, turquoise water, and steep limestone cliffs frame the famous Navagio Beach on the Greek island of Zakynthos. Add to that the iconic shipwreck “Panagiotis,” which has been there since 1980. The smugglers’ cove has attracted tourists for decades. But as in previous years, the beach will remain closed in 2026. And this will be the case until at least October 31.

Danger to Life at the Beach

The “Griechenland Zeitung” reports that there is a new government regulation prohibiting both access to the beach and swimming in the bay. Additionally, boats are allowed to approach no closer than 50 meters from the shore. Those who do not adhere to the access restrictions risk hefty fines. The exact amount of these fines is not known.

The ban is well-founded: There is an acute danger to life! As picturesque as the beach looks, the situation is dangerous. Rockfalls and landslides are possible. In 2018, several people were injured in a major rockfall. In 2022, another earthquake caused rock masses to break loose. To prevent future accidents, the beach has been repeatedly closed off in subsequent years.

Admire the Smugglers’ Cove from Afar

There is a small consolation for tourists, however. They can at least admire the famous Navagio Beach and its wreck from afar this year. There is an official viewing platform from which visitors can see the smugglers’ cove with its bright blue water and the wreck. However, according to the Greek newspaper “Thetoc,” access is only permitted if the municipality of Zakynthos provides fences for safety.
