A hike across national borders, accompanied by stunning Alpine views—that’s what a new winter hiking trail in Tyrol offers. And if you tire of hiking, just strap on your skis.

A newly established winter hiking trail at the Reschen Pass takes nature lovers from Austria to Italy and back again—all within just a few kilometers. The starting point is at about 2,200 meters above sea level in the Tyrolean ski area of Nauders. You can reach it via the Bergkastel cable car gondolas. At the panoramic restaurant at the mountain station, you can refuel with a beautiful view before starting your hike.

Across the Plamort Plateau

From the mountain station, the trail leads through the snowy mountain landscape of the Plamort Plateau and across the border into South Tyrol. A detour to the Plamort Rock is particularly worthwhile: From here, you can enjoy a view of the Reschensee below. The return path then runs back on the Austrian side—downhill through picturesque larch forests. The hike is “ideal for families, leisure hikers, and anyone who loves the winter expanse,” according to the website of the Tyrolean Oberland Tourism Association.

Individual Route Choices Available

Those who complete the entire route to the valley station cover about eleven kilometers and approximately four hours. However, there are also shorter options and even circular routes, allowing for flexible tour planning. You can find an overview of various tour suggestions here.

For those who want to continue being active after the hike, the Nauders ski area offers about 75 kilometers of groomed slopes. The location is at the Reschen Pass, about 100 kilometers southwest of Innsbruck, right on the Austrian-Italian border—and just a few kilometers from Switzerland.
