If you have a dog, you can’t simply exclude your beloved pet from vacation planning. However, dogs are not welcome everywhere, and many vacation accommodations explicitly prohibit them. This includes numerous campgrounds. Fortunately, there are alternatives. Pincamp, the ADAC’s camping portal, has examined all dog-friendly campgrounds in Germany and evaluated guest reviews.
According to Pincamp, three factors were considered in the evaluation: guests’ specific experiences with camping with dogs (45 percent), explicit overall judgments on the campground’s dog-friendliness (45 percent), and the enthusiasm rate (10 percent). “The latter indicates the proportion of relevant guest reviews that highlight a campground as particularly good for vacations with dogs,” writes the camping portal.
Specifically, they asked: How warmly are dogs welcomed? Are there exercise areas, access to water, dog showers? What about fees, safety, and health?
Germany’s Most Dog-Friendly Campgrounds
1st Place: Campingplatz Erlensee, Bavaria
Bavaria leads the way: Campingplatz Erlensee, southeast of Munich, takes first place. According to Pincamp, guests particularly appreciate the natural setting and the opportunity to spend a lot of time with their dog by the water. Dogs are even allowed to swim in the lake. Numerous trails around the campground are suitable for walks and hikes.

2nd Place: Naturpark-Camping Prinzenholz, Schleswig-Holstein
In second place is Naturpark-Camping Prinzenholz in Schleswig-Holstein. A major plus for guests with pets is the dedicated dog beach at Kellersee, where dogs and owners can spend time directly by and in the water.

Even away from the beach, the site is geared toward dog owners. Guests highlight the walking paths that start directly at the campground in their reviews. There is also a dog shower and water bowls. Additionally, it’s clear from the moment of arrival that dogs are welcome here: treats are given as a greeting.
3rd Place: Camping Harfenmühle, Rhineland-Palatinate
Camping Harfenmühle in Rhineland-Palatinate secures third place. Guests particularly praise the quiet location and the hiking trails that start right at the site. The friendliness of the staff is also positively highlighted.
A special feature is particularly important for campers traveling with their dog over New Year’s. On New Year’s Eve, the campground refrains from fireworks, making it especially popular for a vacation with a dog during this time.
The North is Particularly Strong
Looking at the top 25, a clear regional concentration is noticeable. Lower Saxony is most frequently represented with six campgrounds. Schleswig-Holstein has five, and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has four. Together, 15 of the 25 most dog-friendly campgrounds are located in these three northern German states.
