In March, the Marienschlucht near Allensbach will reopen to visitors. The gorge at the southwestern end of Lake Constance was closed 11 years ago following a fatal landslide.

“On Saturday, March 28, it’s finally happening: The Marienschlucht will reopen!” writes the municipality of Bodman-Ludwigshafen on its tourist information page. The anticipation is palpable. The attraction at Lake Constance has been closed to visitors for 11 years. Now, the gorge, located between Bodman-Ludwigshafen and Wallhausen on the Bodanrück peninsula, is reopening—safer and with several new attractions.

Closure After Landslide

Before its closure, this impressive natural site was a popular destination for hikers. However, in May 2015, a landslide occurred, burying and killing a 72-year-old hiker. The gorge was then closed to assess the risk of further landslides and to secure the area.

According to “Südwestrundfunk,” various measures will now ensure the safety of hikers in the Marienschlucht. These include an early warning system with sensors and a gate that closes the trail below the Mondfelsen. Additionally, the new metal walkway runs 10 meters above, no longer at the deepest point of the gorge. The cost of these safety measures is approximately 4.5 million euros, according to “SWR.”

After the hiking trails around the Marienschlucht were gradually reopened, according to the information page of the same name, the popular hiking destination at Lake Constance will fully open next month. Visitors can look forward to some new features in the gorge.

New Panorama Walkway

One of these innovations, according to the local information page, is the “new, safe panorama walkway.” With it, “the impressive Marienschlucht can be discovered from a spectacular perspective.” The panorama walkway is connected to the hiking trails and the ferry service, making it “easily accessible,” as the municipality explains.

A newly designed information trail was also installed during the closure. At various stations, visitors can find information about animals and plants, geology, history, and the role of water. Additionally, according to the information page, there is now a path specifically for children: On the family hiking trail, a peregrine falcon named Falko “playfully guides young explorers from station to station on the new children’s path.”
