The streets are already glowing with festive lights, the scent of roasted almonds wafts through the cities, and the anticipation for Christmas grows day by day. A visit to the Christmas market is naturally part of the experience. The TRAVELBOOK editorial team has gathered information and compiled a selection of the most beautiful markets—this time in Hesse.
Hesse is considered a medium-sized state in Germany. Here, too, you can find cozy, unique, or traditional Christmas markets in many regions during the holiday season. For those who need some inspiration this year, here are the most beautiful Christmas markets in Hesse, selected by our editorial team.
Marburg/Dagobertshausen
This year, the Christmas market will again take place in the Marburg district of Dagobertshausen at the Hofgut Dagobertshausen. Here, the setting makes the difference. A small winter world emerges in the courtyards of the estate, with fire pits, stalls full of handicrafts, and regional products. The scene is especially beautiful in the late afternoon when the barns and half-timbered houses shine in the glow of lights. In addition to the stalls, there are creative courses on selected days, and even Santa Claus visits for the children.

Bad Homburg
Another beautiful Christmas market is located at Bad Homburg Castle. Around the city’s landmark, the White Tower of the Landgrave Castle, festively decorated stalls line up on Advent weekends. The ambiance alone makes a visit worthwhile. Those who take a closer look at the stalls will find crepes and bratwursts as well as woodwork, jewelry, and other handmade decorations. In the castle garden, there is also a life-size nativity scene. Good to know: Many stalls offer a wide selection of vegetarian and vegan treats.

Schlitz
A real highlight and even a world record await visitors at the Christmas market in Schlitz. At 42 meters, the Christmas candle there is the largest in the world. How about meeting for a mulled wine right by the giant candle? The candle is made of red fabric that wraps around the town’s keep and forms the center of the market. Surrounding it are festive stalls, and the marketplace of Schlitz is also festively decorated. In addition to the classic stalls selling roasted almonds, wood carvings, and Christmas stars, there is live music, offerings for children, and guided tours through the historic town.

Michelstadt
In southern Hesse, specifically in the Odenwald district, lies the quaint town of Michelstadt. With its well-preserved old town and many half-timbered buildings, it’s no surprise that the Christmas market is one of the most popular in Hesse. Around 100 wooden stalls are spread across the area between Lindenplatz and Louis-Dagant-Platz, which is adorned with countless lights. Those who enjoy medieval flair will quickly feel at home here among the historic buildings and narrow alleys. Entertainment is provided by live music, guided tours, and a living Advent calendar.

Rüdesheim
Christmas is considered a celebration of love—what could be better than celebrating this holiday together? The Rüdesheim Christmas Market of Nations does just that. Starting at the end of November, the city center transforms into a very special place. For 30 years, traders from many countries have gathered here annually to present their customs, specialties, and goods. Gifts from China, Nepal, or Italy are offered, complemented by wool and felt goods and beverage stands. With around 100 stalls stretching from the Rhine to Oberstraße, the market is perfect for those eager to explore new things.
