In central Germany, a Gallic village full of adventure is taking shape: The Belantis amusement park near Leipzig is set to be transformed into the first Asterix Park outside of France in the coming years. This is part of a plan by the French company Compagnie des Alpes—a clever expansion of their successful brand.
Earlier this spring, the amusement park and ski resort operator Compagnie des Alpes acquired the 27-hectare Belantis site in the Leipzig New Lake District near the A38 for around 22 million euros. Now, according to a report by BILD, the concept behind the purchase is becoming clear: The beloved characters from the Asterix comics are set to make a permanent home in Saxony.
“Belantis is to become the first Asterix Park outside of France,” the company announced during the presentation of its new business figures (2024 revenue: around 1.4 billion euros) in Paris.
Operators Expect Nearly 1 Million Visitors Annually
Expectations are high: The company forecasts up to 900,000 visitors annually for the new theme park. It’s no surprise, as the adventures of Asterix, Obelix, Getafix, and Vitalstatistix are also hugely popular in Germany.
The only existing Asterix Park is located in Plailly near Paris and is one of the most successful amusement parks in Europe. This year alone, it has already attracted 2.9 million guests.

Gradual Transformation
The complete transformation of the amusement park will occur gradually. The final renaming to an Asterix Park is planned for 2030. The first themed area is set to open in spring 2026, focusing on a very special character: “Dogmatix’s Adventure Land” is specifically designed for families with children. Naturally, it revolves around Obelix’s little dog.
“We are excited to start the ambitious transformation plans,” said company CEO Dominique Thillaud. Further details about the project are expected on Thursday.
Rescue for a Struggling Amusement Park
Belantis opened in 2003 on the site of a former open-cast mine. However, in recent years, the park has struggled with declining visitor numbers. The planned renovation could breathe new life into the amusement park. Asterix publisher Walter Stegmaier views the transformation positively: “Now, all fans of the indomitable Gauls will embark on a new, unique adventure close to Leipzig!”
