To find the best excursion destinations nearby in the travel country or even plan a vacation around them, there is now the perfect tool: the interactive “Castle Map,” which clearly displays the most beautiful castles and palaces in the world. Many of these once-important political and social centers are still in use today, such as museums, restaurants, or tourist attractions. Such a day trip can be easily combined with an exploration of the vacation region, offering a unique insight into the history and people of the area.
Those who want to discover and explore a medieval castle, an artistic palace, an inhabited palace, or a historical fortification while on vacation or at home can turn to the new “Castle Map.” The free, interactive world map currently shows 7,738 attractions in 141 countries, each with a photo and a brief entry about its history, all without ads or registration.
How the Structures for “Castle Map” Are Curated
The online atlas relies on a curated selection rather than listing all existing structures. In Germany alone, there are around 25,000 castles and palaces—if they all appeared on the map, it would quickly become overwhelming and thus hardly helpful.
Therefore, the AI behind the project selects carefully: A structure needs a photo, exact coordinates, and a Wikipedia article in English or one of the 24 other languages covered by the atlas. Additionally, there must be enough other Wikipedia entries to prove that the structure is documented and not just mentioned.
The map is based on public data from Wikipedia and OpenFreeMap. The system estimates how well-known a structure is, among other things, by the number of views of its Wikipedia article. Thus, mainly castles and palaces that have already achieved a certain level of fame and are accordingly frequently searched or viewed are listed.

For Germany, there are currently 492 entries on the map. The most famous among them is Neuschwanstein Castle, which even ranks 5th on the world list. The Palace of Sanssouci and the Wartburg rank nationally in 2nd and 3rd place.
In addition to the map, which can be enlarged and rotated at will, the website also offers rankings and statistics with clearly presented data. For example, the most popular structures in the world can be displayed and sorted. Users can also filter the results by various criteria.
For instance, those who want to know which fortress in England enjoys the greatest fame will quickly find the answer: Hadrian’s Wall. And the question of the most popular castle in the world can also be answered with a few clicks: With more than eight million views of its Wikipedia article, the Palace of Versailles near Paris is at the top.
CastleGuessr and Other Map Directories
Similar to the well-known game GeoGuessr, the “Castle Map” also allows users to test their geography knowledge. In the easy-to-use feature, users receive a random image of a castle, palace, or ruin somewhere in the world and must place a pin on an unmarked world map based on it. The solution follows immediately: The distance between the chosen and actual location is shown as a dashed line. The closer the guess is to the real location, the more points are awarded. A fun gimmick that allows users to explore the map playfully.
Following the same principle, other maps have already been developed. On the “World Train Map,” for example, users can explore famous and particularly beautiful train routes around the globe. In addition to the stations served, the route length, travel time, and average and maximum speed of the trains are also displayed.
The “FilmMap” records filming locations worldwide. Not only is the respective city displayed, but even the exact location is marked on the map. The data is also based on information from Wikipedia articles. For example, users can explore Berlin and discover that scenes from James Bond 007 – Octopussy (1983), Don 2 – The King is Back (2011), and Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) were filmed at the Brandenburg Gate, among other places.
