The Castle Road stretches from Mannheim to Bayreuth and is one of Germany’s oldest holiday routes. Along the approximately 780-kilometer route, you can admire numerous castles and palaces–and during the Advent season, there are countless Christmas markets. Christmas Spirit in Mannheim
In Mannheim, visitors can enjoy several Christmas markets, including the traditional market at the Water Tower, one of the oldest in Germany. Set against the impressive backdrop of the Art Nouveau ensemble of Friedrichsplatz and the Water Tower, there are about 160 festively decorated huts. Here, you’ll find everything your heart desires during the Advent season: traditional Christmas decorations, special spices, and plenty of food and drink.
If you’re traveling with children, don’t miss the Mannheim Fairy Tale Forest. In the city center, you’ll find lovingly designed fairy tale houses and figures, along with a stage program and several vendor huts.

Electoral Christmas Market in Schwetzingen
A small highlight in the region during the Advent season is the Electoral Christmas Market in Schwetzingen. The festively illuminated tents are located in the castle’s courtyard and on the castle square. Here, you can buy handmade products, mulled wine, and other specialties. For the little ones, there’s a nostalgic carousel and a train. At the Angel Post Office, they can drop off their wish cards with the Electoral Christmas Angel.

Castle Christmas in Heidelberg
The Christmas market in Heidelberg is spread across several squares in the old town. There are numerous festive stalls offering handicrafts and culinary delights. If you want more than just a stroll through the picturesque alleys, you can also get active: On Karlsplatz, there’s an ice rink where you can skate with a perfect view of Heidelberg Castle.

Old German Christmas Market Bad Wimpfen
In 1487, Emperor Frederick III granted the then-imperial city of Wimpfen the privilege of holding a market before Christmas. Today, the Old German Christmas Market in Bad Wimpfen is considered one of the oldest of its kind. In a medieval-romantic atmosphere, you can stroll through the old town past more than 100 stalls, mainly offering handicrafts. The culinary offerings range from steamed dumplings to bratwurst and waffles.

Käthchen Christmas Market Heilbronn
Around 65 festively decorated wooden huts of the Heilbronn Käthchen Christmas Market transform the city center into a magical world of lights. In addition to handicrafts, mulled wine, and other culinary delights, visitors can enjoy an open-air winter cinema. There’s also an ice rink where curling is offered.

Christmas Magic Schwäbisch Hall
Christmas theater performances, Advent exhibitions, torch and night watchman walks through the old town, and a children’s program in the Gingerbread House create a cozy pre-Christmas atmosphere in Schwäbisch Hall. The Christmas market features beautifully decorated huts where you can sample different types of mulled wine and Christmas treats from the region.

Old Rothenburg Reiterlesmarkt
The Old Rothenburg Reiterlesmarkt showcases Rothenburg ob der Tauber in its most romantic light. Sixty-one stalls offer regional specialties like mulled wine and freshly baked gingerbread. On a stage, brass bands from the region perform daily, and every evening, an Advent window is opened on the second floor of the town hall. The market traditionally opens on the Friday before the first Advent, when the Reiterle arrives on horseback to greet the waiting crowd.

Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt
Recently voted the best Christmas market in Europe: the Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt! Also located on the Castle Road, it offers a wide selection of Nuremberg gingerbread, fruitcake, and other typical Christmas treats. Visitors can also look forward to arts and crafts, toys, and special Christmas tree decorations.

Christmas Market in Forchheim
Forchheim, also on the Castle Road, hosts a smaller Christmas market. The 25 stalls are set around the historic Kaiserpfalz and are beautifully illuminated. A highlight each year is the giant digital Advent calendar projected onto the Kaiserpfalz facade, with a door opened every evening.

Bamberg Christmas Market
Maximiliansplatz in the Bamberg pedestrian zone transforms into a festive square during Advent. Numerous stalls between the historic houses invite you to linger. There are sausages, gingerbread, and mulled wine. Bamberg is known as the city of nativity scenes, with dozens scattered throughout the city. Christmas tours offer insights into the traditions and stories of the nativity scenes.

Christmas Market in Coburg
Handcrafted gifts and local delicacies are available every year at the romantic Christmas Market in Coburg on the Castle Road. The festively decorated stalls and atmospheric lighting on the historic market square create a special ambiance. Visitors can enjoy mulled wine and regional specialties.

Bayreuth Christkindlesmarkt
Around the Old Castle and the market square, the Bayreuth Christkindlesmarkt transforms the city into a special setting. About 40 festively decorated wooden huts and the longest string of lights in Franconia, stretching seven kilometers, create a festive atmosphere. Performances by a choir and lantern bearers add to the ambiance. There’s no shortage of food and drink: gingerbread, roasted almonds, mulled wine, children’s punch, and various savory treats are available.
The Bayreuth Winter Village is already open. Since mid-October, you can enjoy mulled wine and bratwurst daily in an Alpine setting with hut magic.
