Which streets in the world are a must-see and must-walk? A new list from “The Telegraph” provides answers. However, TRAVELBOOK editor Katharina Regenthal finds the selection rather questionable. Find out why here.
Twenty streets you must walk at least once in your life—that’s the call from “The Telegraph.” Naturally, this piques one’s interest. Streets that are so beautiful or unique that they should be seen at least once. Perhaps you’ve already seen one of these streets? Have you been there? I asked myself these questions—and was rather disappointed by the selection. But first, let’s talk about the criteria.
A Mix of Open-Air Museum and Resting Places
According to the magazine, the selection of streets wasn’t about how famous they might be. Instead, it was about a good mix of open-air museum and a good selection of bars, cafes, or restaurants, as well as resting places. All of this is supposed to make strolling through the streets an unforgettable experience.
Perhaps a few street names have already come to mind that fit these criteria. The magazine has created a list of 20 streets, without a specific order, that meet these criteria. Among them is a German street—and it makes the list seem a bit questionable.
This Is Officially the Coolest Neighborhood in the World
This German Street Is Among the Coolest in the World
This German City is in the Top 20
The only German street included is Unter den Linden in Berlin. It is located in Mitte and is lined with linden trees. As a Berliner, I find it far too touristy—of course, the list is intended for tourists. But I wouldn’t describe a walk down this street as an unforgettable experience. There are numerous truly wonderful buildings—the State Opera, the Old Palace, the State Library, the Hotel Adlon, and of course the Brandenburg Gate. And you can walk quite nicely in the middle—though on either side, countless cars drive on multiple lanes, not to mention the never-ending construction sites.
It’s not really idyllic or an experience. As a pedestrian, you should not carelessly cross the street. It can be life-threatening. And the selection of cafes and restaurants is limited, and in my opinion, you pay unnecessarily high prices here.
20 Streets You Must See (?)
Another street on the list also causes some confusion for me. Ebenezer Place in Scotland is mentioned. It is, attention, the shortest street in the world. It is just under two meters long. So you can’t really stroll there, can you?
Whether other streets meet the criteria or are among your personal favorites, you can check for yourself. These are the 20 streets that, according to “The Telegraph,” you should walk at least once in your life:
