Which beaches are particularly beautiful and not overcrowded? For these questions, locals are often the best source. TRAVELBOOK presents five beaches in Croatia that are especially popular with Croatian families.
In recent years, Croatia has become a trendy travel destination for vacationers. It’s no wonder, as it offers numerous stunning beaches along the Mediterranean, which is so popular with Germans. However, with Croatia’s rise as a vacation spot, the risk of encountering many other travelers at the beach also increases–a situation not favored, especially in times of COVID-19. After all, you’d prefer to have the beach to yourself. A good starting point for finding less crowded beaches is often tips from locals–though these aren’t always easy to come by. But a new survey has now compiled the beaches most favored by locals in Croatia.
The survey was conducted by “Atomik Research” for the vacation home rental company “fewo-direkt” from April 30 to May 4, 2021. Five hundred Croatian parents with children up to 15 years old who have traveled as a family in the last five years were surveyed. TRAVELBOOK reveals which beaches were mentioned most frequently.

The Five Best Beaches in Croatia According to Locals
Rajska Plaža in Lopar on the Island of Rab

The most popular beach in Croatia by far is Rajska Plaža in Lopar on the island of Rab, also known as “Paradise Beach” on Google Maps. For more than half of Croatian families, 62 percent, it is the best beach in all of Croatia. This could be due to the turquoise shimmering sea and the gently sloping sandy beach–especially since there are relatively few sandy beaches in Croatia. On land, vacationers can rent umbrellas and sun loungers, and there is a playground with a water slide for children.
Punta Rata in Brela

In second place is Punta Rata beach in Brela in the Split-Dalmatia County. Forty percent of families favored the white pebble beach. It is bordered by rocks jutting out of the sea and a pine forest. Vacationers can play beach volleyball, soccer, or take a jet ski tour at Punta Rata. There are also toilets, changing rooms, sun lounger and umbrella rentals, and a beach bar.

Vela Plaža in Baška on the Island of Krk

In third place is a beach that has long been popular with locals and tourists: Vela Plaža. The beach is located in the bay of Baška on the island of Krk and is nearly two kilometers long. The beach is considered particularly clean, and the view of the Velebit mountains provides a particularly beautiful sight. No wonder, then, that 35 percent of locals favored the beach. In addition to sanitary facilities, there are also ice cream parlors, cafes, and restaurants here.
Crni Molo in Crikvenica
In fourth place is a real insider tip in Croatia: Crni Molo beach in Crikvenica, located on the mainland opposite the island of Krk. Thirty-four percent of Croatian families voted for the sand and pebble beach, whose gently sloping shore is especially popular with families with children. The surrounding pines and firs also provide natural shade.
Zlatni Rat in Bol on the Island of Brač

Also with 34 percent of the votes and thus tied is Zlatni Rat in Bol on the island of Brač. However, unlike the other fourth-place beach, it is much more well-known–due to its extraordinary shape. The beach juts into the sea in the shape of a triangle and is also called the “Golden Horn” of Bol. Additionally, Zlatni Rat scores with its flat pebble shore, which is popular with families with children. Tip: Not far from the beach is Mount Vidova Gora, from which you can enjoy the most beautiful view of the beach.
