Which countries are the best in the world? And what actually makes a country the best? The U.S. news magazine “US News & World Report” answers this annually with a comprehensive ranking. TRAVELBOOK presents the top three countries in the world and highlights the top 20.

A country can be wealthy, but if it keeps its residents on a tight leash or its industry pollutes the air so much that people have to go indoors to breathe fresh air, it won’t likely rank among the best countries in the world. This is evident this year with the example of the USA, which, despite top rankings in economy and tourism, did not make it into the top 10 due to a lack of environmental protection and healthcare. The situation is similar in other strong and rapidly growing economies, such as China or Japan. In contrast, a surprising number of European countries are among the best, including Germany.

The Ranking

Before we take a closer look at the best countries in the world, let’s first clarify what makes a country particularly good. The U.S. news magazine “US News & World Report” has worked on this question again this year, together with the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and states in its report: “The central issue of national performance is not to achieve excellence in one area, but to balance various aspects of national well-being.” Those who achieve this balance to a high degree can count themselves among the best countries in the world.

The U.S. magazine distinguishes eight categories for its ranking: culture and tourism, economic development, governance, health, infrastructure, nature, opportunities, and citizen engagement. Within these categories, there are 24 subcategories, which are composed of 100 individual indicators of national well-being.

The Best Country in the World Is…

… not a newcomer to this spot. Once again, Switzerland has reached the top of the podium of the best countries in the world. But what makes this neighboring country of Germany so much better than its competitors?

According to “US News & World Report,” Switzerland is characterized by “a globally leading balance in all categories.” The small country ranks first in both economic development and governance. It also holds second place in equality of opportunity and in culture and tourism. The Swiss healthcare system ranks fourth. In the remaining categories, Switzerland shows slight weaknesses but is still within the top 20 in infrastructure, public health, and environmental protection. The news magazine concludes: “With productive prosperity, stable institutions, and strong labor market prospects, Switzerland finds a balance within a framework that accounts for the conflicting demands of modern statehood.” The strengths are evenly distributed, unlike in many other countries.

The Top 5 Best Countries in the World

Switzerland is far from alone on its continent with its top ranking in the world. The entire top 5 consists exclusively of Europeans–with several others following them. For example, another neighbor of Germany is in second place: Denmark shines, according to the news magazine, with an “incredibly strong social safety net and a highly successful civil society and institutional framework.” Furthermore, the Danes are considered the healthiest in the world according to the ranking, with their government and infrastructure each ranking second.

Neighboring Sweden secured third place in this year’s ranking. This is due in part to its particularly competitive business environment, broad social investments, stable government, and great opportunities in the country.

Germany Also Among the Best

In fourth place comes a surprise for those who think this country is politically on the brink of collapse: Germany is the fourth-best country in the world in 2026 according to the U.S. ranking. And why? The balance seems to work convincingly well here too. With a high level in economic development and a supposedly “unmatched social infrastructure,” as the report states. Additionally, Germany currently ranks second worldwide in healthcare and the labor market.

The top five best countries in the world are rounded out by the neighboring Netherlands. According to “US News,” it impresses with “strong overall governance based on a highly reliable labor market and a first-class transportation system.”

The U.S. news magazine explains the top ranking of the five Europeans with their “fundamental commitment to solid social safety nets, transparent governance, and high-quality infrastructure.” All five consistently prioritize long-term investments in society over short-term economic booms. This approach is seen by the magazine as proof that “broad well-being forms the foundation for sustainable national success.” And not only these five European countries seem to follow a similar approach. At least that’s how the ranking reads, which gives the first 13 places to Europe.

Context

“Departing from the perception-based approach of previous years,” as “US News & World Report” writes, this year’s ranking of the best countries in the world is based on an analysis of datasets from reputable sources. These include the United Nations, the World Bank, and various NGOs. However, it lacks the personal experiences of people on the ground. Given the current discontent in this country, Germany can serve as a good example here, as the ranking results hardly reflect the dissatisfaction among the population.

To determine the best country in the world, it would probably require both objective data and subjective perception–if that’s even possible. In the end, choosing the best countries is subjective, and even a ranking cannot provide an objective assessment. This is also shown by the current ranking from “US News & World Report.” It defines in advance what makes the best: countries must create a healthy balance, achieve good rankings in many categories, have stable institutions, and high quality of life. The weighting of individual factors also determines where a country stands in the ranking. In the end, however, only each person can decide for themselves, as everyone sets their own focus. The comparison with other rankings shows how different the results can be. For example, these: the best countries for expatriates, the countries with the best opportunities for expatriates, and the World Happiness Report on the happiest countries in the world.
