Those traveling by bus or train on vacation in Mallorca should prepare for rising costs. Starting in 2026, tourists will pay 3 euros for a single ride on the island’s public transport, up from the current 2 euros—a hefty 50 percent increase. However, public transport will remain free for residents of Mallorca.
Price Increase Affects Only Tourists
According to BILD, the city of Palma de Mallorca has announced that this fare change will apply only to visitors without a permanent residence on the island. Residents will continue to benefit from free public transport.
The municipal transport company EMT (Empresa Municipal de Transportes), which operates public transport in Palma and the surrounding area, justifies the increase with rising expenses: According to a report by the “Mallorca Zeitung,” operating costs have risen by almost 44 percent since 2019. At the same time, the price for single tickets has not been adjusted since 2020.
Public Transport Running at a Loss
According to EMT, public transport on the island is fundamentally a loss-making business. It incurs high costs and is “structurally deficient.” Therefore, current fares urgently need to be adjusted to actual expenses to ensure the service’s financing.
The introduction of the new unified card “Tarjeta Única” and free use by residents also contributes to the cost increase, it further states. In 2024, EMT transported over 60 million passengers on a total of 40 lines.
