Our author, Delia, studied for a semester in Australia and traveled across Down Under during that time. Naturally, Sydney, as a world metropolis and the continent’s most populous city, was not left out. Here, she presents her four favorite spots in the coastal city.
Sydney is a city like no other and incomparable to cities I have visited before. Even the approach to landing takes your breath away—an overwhelming view of the sea, sun, and green spaces combined with the city and skyline. Besides the famous landmarks such as the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge, Sydney offers a unique charm with multicultural diversity, a vibrant arts and culture scene, a business center, national parks in the surrounding area, and above all: breathtaking beaches and a surf lifestyle. When I landed here, I knew I had truly arrived in Australia.
Overview
1. Sydney Opera House
The Sydney Opera House is arguably the most famous opera house in the world and an icon of Australia. Since 2007, it has even been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Like many others, I had seen it countless times in photos. Finally standing in front of it in person was a moment I will never forget. As a tourist, it’s definitely worth walking to Bennelong Point to see the Opera House up close. What many don’t realize is that the shell-like form consists of two buildings and houses a total of five halls. The most important of these are the Concert Hall and the Joan Sutherland Theatre.

If you want to take it a step further, you should definitely plan a visit to the Opera House and get tickets for a performance. What might surprise many Germans: Be aware that the level doesn’t match our opera standards. During our visit, Australians even mentioned to us that German operas are of much higher quality. At least architecturally and as an overall experience, it is an absolute highlight and remains an outstanding experience for me!

2. Observatory Hill Lookout
Observatory Hill Lookout is a short walk up a small hill that offers views of the sea with the Harbour Bridge and skyline. Here, you can sit on benches and enjoy the view, which also makes for a perfect photo spot.
3. Bondi to Coogee Beach Walk
Sydney’s most famous beach is Bondi Beach. Here, surfers, joggers, and beach lovers gather to enjoy the one-kilometer stretch of sand. The area offers a lot, with cafes, restaurants, bars, and weekend markets. What struck me immediately was the sporty lifestyle, and a popular activity is the Bondi to Coogee Beach Walk.

4. The Rocks Market
The Rocks is the oldest neighborhood in Sydney and has a historical character. Every weekend, the Rocks Market takes place here, an outdoor market with various stalls. The market, with its live music and street performers, invites both locals and tourists to stop by. I was impressed by the interesting and new things to discover. For example, I left the market with starfish earrings and a turtle necklace–both really nice souvenirs!
