Traveling, flying away, exploring the world–it’s truly something special! But as wonderful as it is, no one wants to spend too much time at the airport. If things don’t go as planned, the stay is often stressful. It’s all the nicer, though, when the airport feels cozy and not like a hospital. TRAVELBOOK presents six airports where it’s not so bad if your flight is delayed.

What makes a good airport? Ideally, it’s well-organized, passengers can quickly and easily find their gate, and there are ways to pass the time during longer stays. The appearance of the airport itself isn’t all that important. Still, it’s nice when the gates, where you might spend more time, don’t look like a waiting room or hospital, right? Many airports impress with unique architecture and spectacular designs. But there are also some, especially smaller airports, that simply offer a cozy feel and reflect the region’s culture.

Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport

An airport that must be included in the list of special airports is Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN). It is the largest in the U.S. state of Montana and belongs to the small town of Bozeman. Even though it has “International” in its name, it only serves domestic destinations.

What makes this airport special, besides its architecture, is the view. You have a direct view of the snow-covered mountains. Additionally, the ceilings are paneled with wood, and there’s a fireplace, giving it a particularly cozy feel. The airport itself states that the terminal is designed with natural wood and stone and also features artworks that represent the character and nature of southwest Montana.

Palm Springs International Airport

Palm Springs International Airport (PSP) in the U.S. state of California is also an airport where you’d gladly spend more time because it’s so unique. At first glance, PSP seems like any other–inside, there’s the check-in area, followed by the security checkpoint. Then comes the big surprise: The gates and thus most of the airport are outdoors. Under countless palm trees, you can enjoy the beautiful weather one last time before your flight.

The airport itself is aware of its uniqueness and has therefore introduced visitor passes, allowing guests to visit without actually flying. The pass acts as a boarding pass, and after a brief security check, you can explore the airport like any other passenger.

Vancouver International Airport

The Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is located in the Canadian province of British Columbia, about 15 kilometers south of Vancouver on Sea Island. The airport is situated on the traditional territory of the Musqueam Indigenous people, which is acknowledged on the premises. With traditional art figures, numerous artistic collaborations, and an Indigenous restaurant, visitors are introduced to the culture.

Jackson Hole Airport

Similar to Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport, Jackson Hole Airport (JAC) in the U.S. state of Wyoming impresses with its location. The terminal is framed by a picturesque backdrop of snow-covered mountains. Inside, the airport is also a sight to behold, as it hosts an art exhibition. The airport itself states on its website that Wyoming loves its cowboy heritage, which is expressed in an oversized watercolor, among other things.

More on the topic

Samui International Airport

A longer stay is definitely worthwhile at Samui International Airport (USM) on the Thai island of Ko Samui. In harmony with its surroundings, much of the airport is outdoors. An open bus shuttles between the gates, and the check-in counters resemble a Thai hotel lobby. The departure gate is adorned with native plants and flowers.

Singapore Changi Airport

Unlike many of the previously mentioned airports, Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) is anything but small or particularly cozy. However, it definitely shouldn’t be left out–this airport truly invites you to linger, making flying almost secondary. The Jewel Changi Airport building is also located on the premises. It houses various leisure attractions as well as the world’s largest and tallest indoor waterfall. Additionally, there are two gardens, a suspension bridge, and two mazes. Those looking to be active can climb a climbing wall, and group games are also offered.

Of course, there are many other airports that don’t look like hospitals. Depending on personal perception and preferences, this can be seen differently. The airports mentioned above are just a small selection.
