Savvy frequent flyers generally know tricks to save a few bucks when booking flights. But apparently, there’s much more to it. An influencer, whose social media accounts are filled with money-saving tips for various situations, claims to have snagged extremely cheap flights using the AI bot ChatGPT. It works as a system. TRAVELBOOK took a closer look at the supposed super-prompt.
Using multiple comparison portals, being flexible with departure airports—some tricks for cheaper travel bookings have become well-known. But modern technology offers even more possibilities. When content creators on Instagram, TikTok, and the like reveal their saving tricks, it can be worthwhile to check out the supposed hacks. One of them, the self-proclaimed personal finance expert Casper Opala, also known as Casper Capital, has recently started swearing by the services of AI for this purpose. The British tabloid portal “Daily Mail” has picked up on the topic.
Influencer Declares ChatGPT as “Your New Travel Agency”
Casper Capital claims to have saved around 700 British pounds (about 812 euros) on flight bookings. He reportedly used a specific “prompt,” a concrete instruction to an AI model—in this case, ChatGPT. The input request included suggesting creative routings, such as connections with layovers and alternative airports. The AI was also supposed to look for split-ticket opportunities, meaning two separate bookings. Additionally, it should name budget airlines often missing from common flight price comparison portals and search for special offers and so-called error fares. These are extremely cheap, erroneous flight prices accidentally published by an airline or booking system. Technical bugs can lead to typos, turning a flight price of 1,300 euros into 130 euros, or currencies being incorrectly converted.
When you take a closer look at the described method, it becomes clear: None of this is really new. TRAVELBOOK already described the various tricks in this article back in 2022. However, what AI bots like ChatGPT—and thus the initiative by influencer Casper Capital—have going for them is time savings thanks to modern technology. The various steps that may be necessary to save money, such as booking open-jaw flights or departures from alternative airports, are completed by the AI in seconds, presenting a possible travel connection. On the downside, however, is the AI’s susceptibility to errors. They are programmed to always provide reliable answers. Users would do well to thoroughly check results. ChatGPT does not access live flight booking data. Information on supposed current prices can actually be inaccurate.
8 Tips to Find the Cheapest Flight Tickets
Here’s the Trick to Finding Really Cheap Flights Even During Vacation Season!
Try ChatGPT for Flight Booking–Without Guarantee
Of course, you can try it out. It’s important not to view the results as a ready-made booking recommendation but as a list of search ideas and combinations that you can then compare yourself with airlines or online travel agencies. Here are some tips:
- Formulate the prompt as specifically as possible.
- Specify the desired time frame, ideally with some flexibility.
- Tell the chatbot the desired departure and destination regions, not individual airports.
- Ask it to name alternative airports, affordable layover cities, often overlooked budget airlines, and creative routings with split-tickets.
Important Notes
You should be aware that while you can save money with various hacks for cheap flight bookings, it may come at the expense of comfort and safety. Flights to alternative airports may be cheaper, but getting there can be cumbersome—and sometimes incur unexpected costs. Specifically regarding split-tickets, you should only book separate flights if there is a buffer of at least four hours in between. Even then, unforeseen circumstances can cause you to miss the self-organized connection. In this case, you have no right to alternative transportation.
Harmless Tricks (Without ChatGPT) for Cheaper Flight Bookings
In fact, you don’t have to reinvent the wheel to save some money on flight bookings. Even the savvy finance expert shares three tips on his Instagram account that have generally proven effective—and work without ChatGPT.
- According to him, you should book flights for Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Saturdays whenever possible. On these three days, they are generally the cheapest.
- Tip for those still studying: “Check which airlines offer student discounts,” advises the influencer. According to him, some airlines offer discounts of up to 50 percent.
- Lastly, it is advisable to make bookings in an incognito window. In incognito mode, the browser history, cookies, and other website data are concealed, so the booking site doesn’t “know” that you’ve already searched for the corresponding connection, which can actually drive up the price.
