Turbulence, delays, or even flight cancellations can turn travel into a real stress test. When many of these factors come together, many passengers reach their limits. The passenger portal “Air Advisor” has created the “Nervous Flyer Score” ranking with the most stressful flight routes in Europe. A German connection is also in the top 10.

This is the most stressful flight route

The most stressful flight route in Europe is from Amsterdam to Barcelona. Although the route never received the worst scores in individual categories, it achieved the highest overall score in the ranking. According to “Air Advisor,” it is primarily the combination of delay rate, cancellations, flight time, and weather in Barcelona and Amsterdam that makes the route between Amsterdam and Barcelona the most stressful in Europe.

The route from London Heathrow to Amsterdam ranks second. This route has the highest rate of flight cancellations at 3.69 percent—more than 2.5 times the average of all routes examined. While there are particularly many cancellations here, the flight time is relatively short, and delays are limited.

The route in third place has the highest rate of delays over 180 minutes. This refers to the route from Manchester to Dublin. Although you are only in the air for about 60 minutes, you must frequently expect delays here.

A German destination is also affected

The eighth place in the ranking is a flight route that ends in Germany. This refers to the route from London Heathrow to Frankfurt. Here, passengers must often expect flight cancellations and delays of about 60 minutes.

When considering only the weather rating, the route from Oslo to Bergen ranks second. Unsurprisingly, Bergen is one of the rainiest cities in Europe. The weather is often unstable and thus also affects air traffic. The highest weather rating was given to the route from Lisbon to Madeira. This is also no surprise, as the runway in Madeira is considered one of the most challenging in all of Europe.

Methodology of the ranking

For the ranking, “Air Advisor” analyzed the busiest routes in Europe. Data for the period from September 2025 to August 2026 was used. Each route was evaluated with a point system from 0 to 100 in six categories. The cancellation rate had the greatest weight. The canceled flights were determined in relation to the total number of flights. Similarly important in the ranking was the length of delays. Long wait times, according to “Air Advisor,” could increase uncertainty and significantly impact a trip through unplanned overnight stays or missed connecting flights.

“Air Advisor” CEO Anton Radchenko explains that the ranking is not intended to prescribe routes that anxious passengers should avoid. Rather, it aims to show where flying can increasingly become a test of endurance.
