Whether a trip is perceived as pleasant or stressful certainly depends on one’s own organization. However, once you have arrived at the departure airport on time, it becomes crucial to the travel experience. The international airport association Airports Council International (ACI) regularly publishes rankings in various categories as part of the “Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Customer Experience Awards.” TRAVELBOOK took a closer look at the airports for the best departure experience (“Best Airports at Departures”).
Details on the Ranking–and What Makes It So Significant
How easy is it to navigate the airport? How are the security checks and check-in organized? Are there unnecessary wait times, and is the staff friendly and helpful? These and similar questions arise when evaluating an airport’s service. Equally important are cleanliness, dining options, and ways to pass the time, such as shopping. Extensive surveys on these topics form the basis for the ACI ranking.
The interviews were conducted in person with more than 700,000 passengers at airports worldwide. Travelers were surveyed on their day of departure, so the results reflect their actual experience directly. Airports that could demonstrate a sufficient number of surveys per quarter were included in the evaluation. The assessment is conducted in various categories and by passenger volume to allow for a fair comparison. In other words, large airports are evaluated separately from smaller ones.
For travelers, the results are particularly interesting because they come from real passengers—not from expert panels or operators who might benefit from good reviews. This makes them a credible indicator of genuine customer satisfaction.
The Major European Departure Airports with the Best Service
In the top tier of major European hubs, meaning airports with more than 40 million passengers annually, two airports share the top spot:
- Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport (Spain)
- Rome-Fiumicino (Italy)
Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport, Madrid’s main airport (see large photo above), ranks fifth by passenger volume and is one of the largest airports in Europe. Rome-Fiumicino is the main international hub of the Italian capital and also ranks among the continent’s largest airports. The service at both locations is anything but lacking: Travelers find the processes efficient and the infrastructure modern. From check-in to security checks to the friendliness of the staff, much is in order, including the clarity of the terminals.

Best Service Quality at Medium-Sized Departure Airports
The ACI ranking includes medium-sized airports with between 25 and 40 million passengers per year. Those that stand out with particularly high service levels include:
- Copenhagen-Kastrup Airport (Denmark)
- Vienna Schwechat Airport (Austria)
- Zurich Airport (Switzerland)
The airports score with short distances, clear signage that allows for good orientation, and an overall high quality of stay. The efficiency of the security checks is particularly highlighted. Experienced travelers can certainly attest that this is where annoying wait times can occur during a flight journey—these can often be avoided through sensible organization. Additionally, the interviews show that the dining options at the airports enhance the stay from the passengers’ perspective.

Small Airports with the Best Departure Service
In the category of smaller airports (15 to 25 million passengers per year), the following are noted by travelers for providing good service for a stress-free departure:
- Gran Canaria Airport (Spain)
- Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (Finland)
- Prague Airport (Czech Republic)
Passengers appreciate the short wait times and the high service orientation of the staff. Helsinki is particularly praised for its modern architecture and efficient processing. In Prague and Gran Canaria, good organization ensures high customer satisfaction.
Where Travelers Experience Especially Smooth Processing
In addition to several other categories, ACI also highlights airports that, according to surveys, offer uncomplicated and intuitive travel. At these airports, the entire processing is exceptionally smooth. Rome-Fiumicino appears again, along with Milan-Linate from the same country. Additionally, airports in Barcelona (Spain) and Izmir (Turkey) are included.
