Germany is the fourth-largest member state of the EU after France, Spain, and Sweden, with just over 357,000 square kilometers (as of May 2022). The population is about 83 million, spread across 16 federal states. These are:
- Baden-Württemberg (State capital: Stuttgart)
- Bavaria (Munich)
- Berlin (Berlin)
- Brandenburg (Potsdam)
- Bremen (Bremen)
- Hamburg (Hamburg)
- Hesse (Wiesbaden)
- Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (Schwerin)
- Lower Saxony (Hanover)
- North Rhine-Westphalia (Düsseldorf)
- Rhineland-Palatinate (Mainz)
- Saarland (Saarbrücken)
- Saxony (Dresden)
- Saxony-Anhalt (Magdeburg)
- Schleswig-Holstein (Kiel)
- Thuringia (Erfurt)
By area, the largest state is Bavaria with 70,542 square kilometers, followed by Lower Saxony (47,710 km²) and Baden-Württemberg (35,748 km²).
Additionally, Germany has a total of nine neighboring countries: Denmark, Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands. The major navigable rivers in Germany are the Rhine, Main, Moselle, Weser, and Elbe.
