The 16 Federal States in Germany
The Federal Republic has consisted of 16 states since 1990. They differ not only in landscapes–some offer coasts and seas, others mountains, and still others internationally known cities–but especially in size. Among the “giants” of the states is the Free State of Bavaria, leading with 70,542 square kilometers. Bavaria is followed by Lower Saxony with 47,710 square kilometers. For the bronze medal, we head back south to Baden-Württemberg, which covers 35,748 square kilometers (Source: Statista).
And now you might wonder, which is the smallest state? That’s Bremen, with just 410 square kilometers. Like Berlin and Hamburg, it is a city-state.
