Summer is beer garden season! TRAVELBOOK showcases 18 beer gardens from Munich to Kiel, where you can enjoy beer, bratwurst, and more.
The traditional Bavarian custom of celebrating outdoors with beer and good company has long found fans worldwide. In Germany, there is no region without charming beer gardens, from Kiel in the far north to Munich, from Frankfurt am Main to the banks of the Elbe in Dresden.
TRAVELBOOK has compiled a list of 18 particularly beautiful and popular beer gardens in Germany.
Seehof Herrsching am Ammersee, Bavaria
A romantic atmosphere arises in this beautiful beer garden right on the shores of Lake Ammersee (see the large photo above). Freshly tapped beer is served with Bavarian delicacies, fish specialties from local waters, and homemade stone oven pizza. As is customary in Bavaria, you can also bring your own snacks.
Opening hours: Restaurant continuously from 11:45 a.m. to 10 p.m., beer garden open in summer during good weather.
Biergarten Kaltenbrunn, Bavaria
Few beer gardens in Germany offer such a beautiful view as this one. The Tegernsee, surrounded by mountains, lies at the guests’ feet in a brilliant blue. Tenant Michael Käfer had the beer garden extensively renovated and reopened in summer 2018–guests seem to love it.
Open: daily from 11 a.m., only in good weather.
Café am Neuen See, Berlin
The green heart of Berlin beats in the Tiergarten. At Café am Neuen See, located right by the water in the shade of old trees, you can toast passing paddlers or duck families. There are homemade pretzels, Leberkäse, stone oven pizza, and sourdough bread from the in-house bakery. The beer garden has recently been extensively renovated.
Opening hours: Restaurant daily 9 a.m. to midnight; beer garden in good weather Mon-Fri from noon, Sat/Sun/holidays from 11 a.m.
Pratergarten, Berlin
The oldest beer garden in Berlin is located in Prenzlauer Berg on the popular Kastanienallee, the Pratergarten. In this bustling area, you wouldn’t expect such a haven of coziness. But since 1837, sausages and beer have been served here–nowadays to a colorful mix of locals, newcomers, and tourists. For cooler summer nights, 80 of the 600 seats are covered.
Open: Beer garden daily from noon, in good weather.
Schillergarten, Dresden
The beer garden of the traditional Schillergarten in Dresden is not the largest in Germany, but it is the largest in the city–and perhaps the most beautiful. One thing is certain: The location is perfect. The approximately 850 seats are located right at the foot of the famous Elbe bridge “Blue Wonder” in the former villa suburb of Blasewitz. With rustic food and cool beer, the view sweeps over the Elbe and the Loschwitz hills, while ships of the Saxon Steamship Company pass by.
Opening hours: Restaurant daily from 11 a.m.; for summer operation/beer garden, refer to daily opening within the restaurant hours.
Gerbermühle, Frankfurt am Main
Gerbermühle on the banks of the Main is a bit more upscale, but the view across the river to the skyline of the banking metropolis is simply unique. Outside in the beer garden, there are typical beer garden dishes, while the restaurant offers food for the more discerning palate.
Opening hours: 11:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m..
Kastaniengarten, Freiburg
How about a hearty Weißwurst breakfast? Or in the evening, a Flammkuchen with your beer? And, of course, a magnificent sunset view over the city–completely free of charge. Kastaniengarten in Greiffenegg-Schlössle is one of the most beautiful and oldest beer gardens in southern Baden. It’s also very popular with students, as there are regularly particularly affordable offers on the menu for them.

Biergarten Landhaus Walter, Hamburg
Landhaus Walter in Hamburg’s city park is an institution. Far from the boom of beach bars, time has stood still here in the green heart of the city. And yet, or perhaps because of this, the Hamburg beer garden at Landhaus Walter, with its 1,200 seats on 8,000 square meters of city forest, is one of the most popular in the city.
Opening hours: Mon-Fri 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., Sat/Sun noon to 10 p.m., subject to weather-related changes.
Waterloo Biergarten, Hannover
The oldest beer garden in the capital of Lower Saxony calls itself the “summer meeting place of the city”–and it’s probably not wrong. The 1,500 seats at Waterloo are fully occupied not only on sunny days. At the four beer taps, beer is poured with plenty of foam. And this has been the case for about a quarter of a century.

Biergarten Forstbaumschule, Kiel
Northern Germans also love their beer gardens! The largest in the region is idyllically located in a park in Kiel. An original concession: The Forstbaumschule menu includes Obazda and pretzels, as well as fried herring and Holstein potatoes with herb quark.
Opening hours: Restaurant Mon-Thu 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., Fri/Sat until midnight, Sun until 11 p.m.; beer garden in good weather Mon-Fri from 4 p.m., Sat/Sun from 1 p.m.
Biergarten am Deutschen Eck, Koblenz
Where the Rhine and Moselle meet in Koblenz lies the Deutsches Eck, an artificially raised headland with the equestrian statue of the first German Emperor Wilhelm I. Here, too, is the beautiful Königsbacher beer garden, where you can wonderfully watch the sunset and the passing ships. Hearty home-style cooking is available for refreshment.

Hellers Volksgarten, Cologne
In the middle of the Volksgarten in Cologne’s southern city lies Hellers, where advocates of various tastes peacefully come together. Pils, wheat beer, Kölsch, or organic beer are enjoyed in the shade of the trees by the small lake. The beer garden has 650 seats and a long history, with revelry dating back to 1891.
Open: Tue-Fri 2 p.m. to 11 p.m., Sat/Sun 1 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Hafenhalle, Konstanz
For more than 30 years, Hafenhalle in Konstanz has been a true institution and is one of the most beautiful beer gardens in Germany. Located directly at the Konstanz harbor, visitors enjoy a magnificent view of Lake Constance in the beer garden with six types of freshly tapped beer and hearty snacks.
Open: Mon-Thu 10 a.m. to midnight, Fri-Sun 10 a.m. to 1 a.m.
Biergarten im Schrebers, Leipzig
A “Schrebergarten” of a very special kind is the beer garden in “Schrebers”: Right in the middle of Leipzig, yet a green, peaceful oasis with 300 seats. In the historic ambiance of a half-timbered house with a tower, authentic Bavarian beer garden flair emerges. A variety of beers are tapped, from Andechser to Krostitzer, and there are grilled steaks. Highlights include the small gardener museum and the historic-style playground.
Opening hours: Mon/Tue closed, Wed-Fri from 4 p.m., Sat/Sun/holidays from 11 a.m.
Biergarten am Chinesischen Turm, Munich
The beer garden at the Chinese Tower in the middle of the English Garden is a magnet for locals and tourists alike, offering 7,500 seats. Students from the nearby university also enjoy the midday sun here or find a spot with their laptops under the shade-giving trees. Even wireless internet is available. However, due to the beer garden’s popularity, it can get quite crowded at times.
Open: In dry and warm weather Mon-Fri from 11 a.m., Sat/Sun from 10 a.m.; in cold/uncertain weather, only the kiosk is open from noon.
Gasthausbrauerei Meierei im Neuen Garten, Potsdam
In a beautiful location right on the shores of the Jungfernsee in Potsdam lies the Gasthausbrauerei Meierei in the New Garden. In the building erected in 1790, dairy products were once produced for the royal court kitchen. After a long period of ruin from 1945 to 2002, the former Meierei was rediscovered and extensively restored. The beer is brewed in changing varieties.

Biergarten Alte Linde, Regensburg
Right on the Danube with a fantastic view of the Jahninsel and the old town of Regensburg, you sit in this beautiful beer garden–of course, as the name suggests, in the shade of linden trees. Guests praise the tasty food and good service in addition to the ambiance.

Biergarten im Schlossgarten, Stuttgart
Under old chestnut trees in the grand heart of Stuttgart, the team promises visitors to the beer garden in the Schlossgarten a “feel-good stay.” The program includes morning pints with live music, public viewing, and other (musical) highlights. Interesting for onlookers: The beer garden is directly adjacent to the closed area of the train station construction site.
