A quiet vacation or “quietcation” is a travel trend that is increasingly captivating people. Why is that? And where can we go if we just want peace? TRAVELBOOK presents seven places in Europe for your own quietcation.
We are in a constant state of alert. Every few minutes, sometimes even seconds, private messages arrive in messaging services or ones predicting the end of the world. On Instagram, TikTok, and the like, we scroll through hundreds of pieces of information, faces, and sounds in seconds, plus demands from people sitting right next to us. It’s constantly loud, both internally and externally. We are so accustomed to digital noise that silence can even cause stress. We keep ourselves so busy that doing nothing can sometimes feel physically uncomfortable.
Given this constant state of stress, it’s no wonder that many people have a strong desire for peace. It’s no wonder that a relaxing vacation shouldn’t also mean stress, such as from crowds at popular attractions. Quietcation, or the “quiet vacation,” promises to be an antidote to stress. At least for a few weeks—or however long we can take a break from our stressful daily lives.
What Do You Do on a Quietcation?
Preferably, nothing at first, or at least not much. The point is to slow down, unwind, and ground yourself. Where or how you do this is up to your own taste. Some people completely disconnect by walking through the woods with open eyes and a turned-off phone. Others can best relax in a sauna. The author of this article can most effectively shake off stress at a sea with waves. Mountain hikes, yoga, and meditation retreats—there are many variations of the quiet vacation. Almost all involve nature. Nature grounds, calms the nervous system, and is often quiet (except for my wave-tossed sea). Less is better in every way with this type of vacation. This also applies to smartphones and the like, so during a quietcation, the phone is often turned off or at least set to silent mode.
Where in Europe Can You Have a Quietcation?
Theoretically, peace doesn’t necessarily require a specific place, as we ideally find it within ourselves. However, most people who embark on a quietcation want to get away from their everyday environment, which is stressful and perhaps loud, and go somewhere so peaceful that their overstimulated nervous system can relax in the calm surroundings. And there are quite a few of these places in Europe. TRAVELBOOK presents seven of them here.
Cabin Vacation in Finland

An image that might come to mind for many when thinking of a quietcation is the classic cabin vacation with a sauna by a lake. This is possible in many places in Finland, where sauna and cabin are part of the Finnish way of life. This is also why they are the happiest nation on earth year after year.
Lofoten, Norway

Norway is already known for nature, peace, and vastness. Particularly quiet and thus suitable for a quietcation is the Norwegian Lofoten archipelago in the northwest. Here, those seeking peace will find characteristic red fishing houses, plenty of water, and nature. Depending on the season, the impressive Northern Lights, the Aurora Borealis, can be observed here in the stillness of the night. There aren’t too many people here, so introspection and being with oneself are easily possible.
Meditation and Mindfulness Retreats in the Allgäu, Germany

The Swiss Allgäu promises genuine peace and opportunities to reconnect with oneself and one’s own peace, thanks to its tranquil mountain scenery. Those who want guidance during their quietcation or wish to delve deeper into Zen, meditation, and mindfulness can find suitable offers for their quiet vacation in various meditation centers in the Allgäu.
The Portuguese Hinterland

Portugal is now an extremely popular travel destination, especially during peak seasons. However, tourism is mainly concentrated along the coasts. In the hinterland, there are still many places where few tourists venture, and if they do, they are also seeking peace and deceleration. It’s not uncommon to have no cell reception on the gravel roads in the Portuguese hinterland. A shock for some, a welcome digital detox for others. A very special place from my childhood that I would like to mention here for a quietcation in the Monchique Mountains is the country inn Reguengo. Ideal for families, this wonderful place offers no cell reception but plenty of nature, animals, and yoga.
Another lovely option for a quietcation in the Portuguese hinterland is horseback riding vacations. There are several offers here for young and old, where the hilly landscapes can be explored on horseback, in harmony with the animal and nature.
Azores, Portugal

The Azores, a Portuguese archipelago in the Atlantic, also offer pure nature, albeit a bit more dramatic. One of these nine main islands is Ilha das Flores, the Flower Island, which is still considered an insider tip among European islands. The volcanic island is about 141 square miles and is particularly suitable for a hiking quietcation. There are five hiking trails here that lead past waterfalls, crater lakes, and hot springs, covering almost the entire island. The island is home to around 4,000 people and is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
Camping in Estonia

As in various Scandinavian countries, the right of public access applies in Estonia. This means you can pitch your tent in nature under certain conditions and camp. Additionally, there are many free campsites in Estonia, as well as those you have to pay for. In short, if you want a nature-based overnight stay for your quietcation, you can get it cheaply in Estonia—sleeping under the stars, swimming in lakes, and sometimes solitude in nature included. If you prefer Scandinavia: the right of public access also applies in Sweden, Norway, and Finland.
Glamping in Europe

If you don’t want it too rustic but still as close to nature as possible, you can plan your quietcation in the form of a glamping vacation. There are now providers in many places in Europe who have created beautiful spots where large, bright bell or dome tents stand on wooden platforms, equipped with a comfortable bed and various amenities from a clothes rack to a cozy lounge. In Europe, there are hundreds of options on the mainland and on the islands, such as in Mallorca or Tenerife, in the Algarve in Portugal, in the French Brittany, and many more.
