Germans are world champions in nude bathing, studies have shown. But amid all the nudist fun, there are things you should definitely avoid. Here, we reveal seven nudist no-gos.
Even in nudism, known as Freikörperkultur (FKK), there are some rules to follow. Otherwise, there can be unpleasant consequences. Some no-gos should be obvious, while others might be challenging for “beginners.” Curious? Let’s dive into the 7 no-gos that are a definite no when nude bathing!
Nudism–The 7 No-Gos
1. Staring
It’s an unwritten rule among nudists to interact as you would when clothed. So, staring at others while nude bathing, at a nudist beach, or in a nudist spa is a definite no. “Staring is a no-go, looking is normal,” says Wolfgang Weinreich from the nudist travel agency Miramare to TRAVELBOOK. If someone becomes too intrusive, Weinreich says they can be asked to leave. “This can happen, and it has happened before.”

2. Taking Photos
If you want to take a photo at a nudist beach or hotel, make sure there are no people in the picture who are unaware or do not want to be photographed. According to Weinreich, photography is generally not welcome in nudism. “It’s best to avoid it. Or ask around if you can take a photo. If the people being photographed don’t know, it’s impossible,” says Weinreich.

3. Taking Unfavorable Positions
According to Weinreich, who has been a nudist for nearly 70 years, the same behaviors apply as at a textile beach. Just as you move in a bikini or swim trunks, you should also move and behave naked. “I don’t constantly remind myself that I’m naked. But, of course, you cross your legs when sitting–just as you would in a bikini.” Sitting cross-legged or with spread legs is one of the biggest no-gos in nudism.

4. Forgetting a Towel
“A good nudist is recognized by a towel over their arm,” Weinreich tells TRAVELBOOK.de. According to the expert, you should never sit anywhere without a towel or mat. “That’s very important.”

5. Crowding Others
Just as you maintain a certain distance from others when clothed, you should also respect this distance when naked. “It’s relatively normal: If you’re at the ice cream stand during a nudist vacation, don’t crowd the person in front of you or push them. You wouldn’t do that at the supermarket checkout either,” says Weinreich.
6. Exchanging Affection
A kiss in greeting or a hug: There’s nothing wrong with that at a nudist beach or spa. But anything beyond that should be avoided. Weinreich adds: “Bedroom affections in public–you wouldn’t do that in a swimsuit either.”

7. Provoking Others
Another absolute no-go in nudism: “Provocations are not acceptable,” says Wolfgang Weinreich. “A naked person has no place at a textile beach. Just as clothing is not tolerated at a nudist beach, you must respect the rules of others.” Weinreich also points out rules in other countries where nudism is not allowed or where you can even be penalized for it.
