Nudity Soon to Be Banned at This Naturist Campground–Here’s Why

Some people only feel truly free when they can move around without pants, T-shirts, and the like. For those who want to do this outside their own four walls, there are specially designated nudist areas. However, a true nudist institution is now set to disappear on the North Sea–the last nudist campsite in Hooksiel is facing closure.

For decades, fans of the nudist culture have been coming to the campsite in Hooksiel on the North Sea, which has a designated nudist area. Around 400 pitches are available for nudists. But this is set to end in 2027. The new operator of the campsite plans to close the nudist area. The company says it’s no longer profitable, as reported by “NDR.” According to the report, only 125 of the approximately 400 nudist pitches are occupied by seasonal campers–economically unsustainable, it says.

Petition aims to save nudist campsite

The impending closure of the area on the campsite has been met with disappointment and incomprehension among nudist fans. After all, the nudist campsite in Hooksiel is the last one on the North Sea. Real alternatives are only available again on the Baltic Sea.

With the help of a petition, the area is still hoped to be saved. Two thousand signatures are needed–currently, about 1,300 have been collected (as of May 2026). The initiators demand that the nudist camping area be preserved. The closure would destroy a community space, uproot families and long-time seasonal campers, and eliminate an important leisure and recreation offering for the region without replacement, according to the justification.

Some comments from supporters of the petition also suggest simply reducing the size of the nudist area if there aren’t currently enough nudists to fill all 400 spots. So far, the suggestion has not been addressed, according to “NDR.”

The operator reportedly only offers that current nudist campers get priority for a new pitch. However, this would be with clothes. They don’t want to chase anyone away, according to the campsite operator’s report.

Alternative nudist beach?

Perhaps not a real consolation for true nudist campers, but at least a small alternative, are nudist sections on many beaches on the North Sea. The following islands and places have nudist areas on the beach:

  • Sylt
  • Amrum
  • St. Peter-Ording
  • Norderney
  • Wangerooge
