Many use their vacation to escape everyday life. While most travel to popular holiday destinations, the mountains, or the sea, there are also accommodations that truly lie in the proverbial “middle of nowhere.” One of them is in Greenland–and it is likely one of the most remote vacation homes in the world.

It stands–or rather, it floats–in the middle of a glacier bay in eastern Greenland, surrounded by icebergs, massive glaciers, and mountain peaks: a green, hexagonal hut anchored to the land with ropes and an anchor, but otherwise freely floating in a bay. The so-called “Floating Glacier Hut” is probably one of the most extraordinary vacation accommodations in the world and is unique in its form.

Aurora Hut in the Middle of Greenland

In an interview with the British “BBC,” founder Nicolo Segreto, a local glacier guide, talked about the idea behind the floating accommodation. About ten years ago, Segreto accidentally discovered a glacier cave on the east coast of Greenland. To boost tourism in the region, he founded an adventure company, which eventually led to the creation of the Floating Glacier Hut.

Even the journey to the floating accommodation is an adventure in itself. First, you fly to Iceland, usually to Reykjavík, then continue with a regional flight to Kulusuk in eastern Greenland. From there, it’s about a 45-minute boat ride to an uninhabited glacier bay where the accommodation is located. The nearest larger town, Ittoqqortoormiit, is hundreds of kilometers away, and there is no internet. If you want to make a phone call, you can only do so via a satellite phone. In bad weather, the hut cannot be reached, according to the booking platform “Airbnb.”

A look inside the hut reveals a simply furnished accommodation with about 20 square meters of space, a double bed, a small kitchen, and storage for essentials. According to Greenland’s official tourism organization, guests can not only stay overnight but also observe the starry sky and the northern lights through the glass dome. Additionally, barbecue evenings on the deck and guided ice cave, glacier, and fishing excursions are offered. Even though the rectangular Aurora Hut is mostly glazed, it is said to be quite safe according to the operator. “If a polar bear comes,” says Segreto, “you’re safest here. Just go inside and lock the door,” he explained in the BBC interview. The tour guide himself is also said to live in a nearby accommodation for safety.

According to current information (as of November), the Floating Glacier Hut is fully booked until July 2026. After that, it is available for about 990 euros per night.

More Extraordinary Accommodations

There are also extraordinary vacation accommodations in Germany. This includes the approximately 75-square-meter “Floating House” (TRAVELBOOK reported) off the island of Usedom in the marina of Kröslin. Guests stay here in a stilted floating house equipped with three bedrooms and even a private sauna. For those who prefer warmer climates, there is a unique finca on Mallorca: a former mill in the municipality of Llubí in the island’s interior, where guests can stay in the historic mill tower on 150 square meters.
