In the far south of Germany lies a small community that’s not only perfect for a few relaxing days in Bavaria–it also serves as the ideal starting point for numerous activities in the region. We’re talking about Inzell. TRAVELBOOK editor Katharina Regenthal has vacationed there herself and shares the best tips for this hidden gem.

Inzell in the Chiemgau Alps

Inzell is located in southern Germany and is part of the Upper Bavarian district of Traunstein. The community in the Chiemgau Alps is framed by the Rauschberg, Zinnkopf, and Teisenberg mountains. It is a state-recognized air spa, meaning the air there has properties conducive to relaxation and health.

Around Inzell, there are numerous lakes and many hiking opportunities. The community also offers the perfect starting point for various activities due to its ideal location. It’s only an hour and a half by car to Munich and just 40 minutes to Salzburg.

Cooling Off in Nearby Lakes

Many have surely heard of the Chiemsee or Königssee. The small village of Inzell, however, is less known–yet it is ideally situated. From there, you can experience something new every day without having to drive for hours. When I spent a few days in Inzell, summer was at its peak. It was incredibly hot, so cooling off and refreshing were top priorities.

Chiemsee

It’s just 25 kilometers by car from Inzell to Chiemsee. Depending on traffic, you’re there in less than half an hour at the beautiful Chiemsee. If you don’t just want to lie on the shore or swim a bit, I highly recommend renting a stand-up paddleboard. This way, you can explore the water in a different way.

Königssee

If you ever vacation in Inzell, you should definitely plan a trip to Königssee. It was my personal highlight. The Bavarian community is about 40 kilometers from the picturesque lake nestled in the Berchtesgaden mountains. Many opt for a boat trip to the pilgrimage church of St. Bartholomä. However, we weren’t keen on crowded boats and instead rented a small paddleboat. With it, we could leisurely (though not too far) cruise across the lake. For a bit of cooling off and a short break, we docked at the shore and swam in Königssee–a truly wonderful experience!

Badepark Inzell

Inzell itself also offers cooling off. Surrounded by a beautiful mountain backdrop lies Badepark Inzell. The natural swimming lake is particularly lovely, as it is cleaned naturally with plants in the water. If the weather isn’t suitable for swimming, there’s also an indoor pool with a slide, where both young and old can enjoy themselves.

Hiking Around Inzell

Weißbach Gorge

In just ten minutes by car, you can reach Weißbach Gorge. The hike along the water is about four kilometers long, with a reward waiting at the end in the form of a guesthouse. But the path itself is absolutely worth seeing. On narrow walkways and between high rocks, you walk along the crystal-clear water. In some places, it trickles down the rocks, and when the sun shines, the droplets sparkle like little diamonds.

We were lucky during our hike. Initially, it looked like a storm was coming, so hardly anyone ventured out. But the weather quickly cleared up, and it was a wonderful summer day with few people in Weißbach Gorge. After a short stop, we headed back–and it was much busier, which honestly made it less enjoyable. So it’s worth starting the hike as early as possible.

Bäckeralm

Directly from Inzell, there are numerous hiking opportunities without having to drive anywhere first. One particularly beautiful and worthwhile hike is the path to Bäckeralm. It is located at around 1,000 meters altitude and was built in 1799. Once at the top, you’re greeted by grazing cows and the scent of warm Kaiserschmarrn, and rewarded with a magnificent view over the mountains.

Frillensee

Also easily accessible on foot from Inzell is Frillensee. Although swimming is not allowed there, it’s still worth a visit. The emerald green color of the lake is impressive. Frillensee is considered the coldest lake in Germany at this altitude, so in winter it freezes relatively quickly, and events like speed skating often take place there. Fittingly, Inzell is home to the Bavarian state performance center for speed skating.

Every Mountain Worth a Hike

For hiking enthusiasts, Inzell is the perfect vacation spot. Numerous hikes are possible from there. Either to Falkenstein or Inzeller Kienberg. Rauschberg is also nearby, as is Unternberg in Ruhpolding. The latter also has a chairlift, which for me as a city kid is always a highlight.

A Stone’s Throw to Austria

If you want to take a break from nature for a day, you should plan a trip to Salzburg. The Austrian border is very close, and depending on traffic, you’re in Salzburg in just 40 minutes. In the city of Mozart, you can experience culture, stroll, and take a break in the numerous coffee houses. What else the city has to offer, you can find out in this article.
