The spa town of Bad Kissingen is known for its healing springs and historic architecture. Nestled in the Rhön Biosphere Reserve, it has also been part of the UNESCO World Heritage “Great Spa Towns of Europe” since July 2021. TRAVELBOOK author Sarah Bachmann shares the best tips for her hometown.

Bad Kissingen was already appreciated for its healing springs during Roman times. The spa town flourished in the 19th century, becoming an important site for health spas and medical treatments. It was also a popular destination for notable figures such as Empress Elisabeth of Austria and Prince Otto von Bismarck.

Even today, the cultural influence of its prominent guests is still evident through the historic buildings and spa facilities. In 2021, the spa town was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List due to its historical significance and architecture.

Tips for Bad Kissingen

Spa and Rose Garden

Visitors to Bad Kissingen should definitely stop by one of the beautiful parks. The Spa Garden, in particular, is one of the most famous parks. It is located in the city center, not far from the Ludwigsbrücke. On about two hectares, you’ll find lovingly designed flower beds, benches, quiet paths, and a tree-lined avenue.

According to “Frankentourismus.de,” the garden was established in 1834 by King Ludwig I, who also commissioned the Arcade Building, which today forms the heart of the Spa Garden.

Just a short walk from the Spa Garden is the Rose Garden, which houses over 160 different varieties of roses. Tip: From the Ludwigsbrücke, which spans the Franconian Saale, you have a beautiful view of the garden. The steamboat landing is also located directly in the Rose Garden, from where trips downstream toward the Graduation Tower begin.

Wandelhalle

Bad Kissingen is known for its seven healing springs. There are drinking fountains throughout the city where visitors can taste the mineral water. At the KissSalis Therme, you can also bathe in the thermal water of the Schönbornsprudel. The largest drinking fountain, however, is located in the Wandelhalle, completed in 1912 and considered the largest Wandelhalle in Europe.

Even those not visiting Bad Kissingen for spa purposes should take a look at this impressive building. The hall is built in the style of a basilica and consists of light-filled colonnades offering a view of the Spa Garden. In the Fountain Hall, fountain attendants serve the healing water daily. Another architectural feature is the rotating concert shell at the back of the Wandelhalle, which can be turned toward the Spa Garden or the interior of the hall, depending on the weather.

Historic Old Town

Strolling through the old town, you’ll quickly encounter historic buildings. Visible from the Ludwigsbrücke, near the Wandelhalle and Spa Garden, is the Regentenbau, the landmark of Bad Kissingen. A unique feature of the building is the Max Littmann Hall, which, due to its acoustics, is considered one of the best concert halls in the world, according to the “Kissinger Sommer.”

Along Ludwigstraße, where you can find various shops, you reach the Kurtheater after about ten minutes. Behind the baroque facade is a hall with green Art Nouveau walls and a decorative ceiling painting. Other historic buildings, such as the Herz-Jesu Parish Church or the town’s marketplace, are also within walking distance.

Botenlauben Castle Ruins

A bit outside the city center, in the Reiterswiesen district, lie the Botenlauben Castle Ruins. They are easily accessible via several hiking trails or by bus. After a short climb, you’ll find the remains of the former castle, also known as Bodenlaube. Wide gravel paths lead around the site. Two free-standing towers are accessible and offer a wide view of the surroundings. From above, you can see far over the city, the Saale Valley, and into the Rhön.
