A fairy-tale image captivates millions: a festively lit Christmas market, framed by stalls, strings of lights, and a magnificent tree–right in front of the world-famous Buckingham Palace. The images quickly spread on social media. But anyone tempted to travel to London by this scene was bitterly disappointed. This Christmas market doesn’t exist.
Hype Over Alleged Christmas Market at Buckingham Palace
As BILD reports, the supposed photos of a festively decorated Christmas market in front of the British king’s residence have been causing excitement on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook for days. The setting was particularly intriguing: A Christmas market right in front of Buckingham Palace–the Advent atmosphere couldn’t be more central or royal.
Some posts even mentioned specific dates. The market was said to take place between November 14 and January 5. But that was entirely made up. Those who made the trip found themselves disappointed in front of the palace. No mulled wine, no festive lights, no stalls–just the stark reality of an empty square.
BBC Uncovers AI Forgery
According to the British broadcaster BBC, the viral images are a complete forgery. The pictures were created using artificial intelligence. In reality, there is no Christmas decoration, market, or stalls in front of Buckingham Palace.
Even supposed testimonials on social media, where users rave about the alleged market, are also artificially generated, according to the BBC. Not only private users but also well-known leisure and travel profiles fell for the hoax and spread the deceptively real images further.
The BBC even spoke with several tourists who had traveled specifically to visit the alleged Christmas market–only to find out on-site that it never existed. The disappointment was significant.
Royal Shop Forced to Clarify
The images reached so many people that even the British royal family felt compelled to intervene. An official notice was posted on the website of the Royal Mews Christmas Shop–a temporary Christmas store within the royal stables.
It reads: “Please note that the Royal Mews Christmas Shop is a pop-up store selling festive products from the Royal Collection Trust in the existing shop premises of the Royal Mews, and not a Christmas market.” And even clearer: “There will be no Christmas market at Buckingham Palace.”
A striking example of how realistic AI-generated images can be–and how quickly they can mislead even experienced users.
