Before heading off on a well-deserved vacation, there’s the dreaded task of packing. For some, it’s a real test of patience. To help you avoid frustration and start your vacation relaxed, TRAVELBOOK introduces the 5-4-3-2-1 packing rule.
There are two types of people: those who arrive on vacation perfectly organized and those who realize at the hotel that they’ve packed plenty of tops but nothing for the lower half of their body. To prevent this from happening to you, you can apply the 5-4-3-2-1 rule for a one-week trip.
What Matters When Packing
Vacation means relaxation, adventure, and escaping daily life. To avoid clothing frustration at your destination, start packing your suitcase with foresight and efficiency. Of course, it depends on whether you’re going on a winter, summer, beach, mountain, or city vacation, but the 5-4-3-2-1 rule provides a rough guide for packing.
When packing your suitcase, choose items that can be mixed and matched. This includes colors, fabrics, and patterns. Basic pieces in neutral colors are a good strategy. But a complete outfit also includes shoes and accessories that ideally match every outfit.
How the 5-4-3-2-1 Rule Works
The 5-4-3-2-1 rule helps pack efficiently for a one-week trip; if you’re vacationing for two weeks or longer, you can adjust the numbers upward. The number of clothing items and accessories is limited, yet you have maximum mix-and-match possibilities. Here’s how the 5-4-3-2-1 rule works:
5: Pack five tops, focusing on neutral colors like gray, black, brown, white, or beige. Ideally, include a classic T-shirt, something long-sleeved for cooler weather, or something dressy for the evening—a top with thin straps can also be included.
4: Choose four bottoms. This includes pants, jeans, shorts, or skirts. Coordinate with the tops you’ve packed, as both should be mixable.
3: Select three full-body items. This includes a jacket, cardigan, or coat, as well as dresses or jumpsuits. If you’re going on a summer vacation, you can skip the jacket/coat and choose another dress. While pants and tops are in neutral colors, dresses and jumpsuits can have summery patterns or colors.
2: Now pack shoes. Comfort should be the priority. Choose a pair for everyday wear (depending on the type of vacation, sneakers, sandals, etc.) and a pair for the evening or a special occasion. You’ll already have a pair on your feet during travel, giving you three pairs to choose from.
1: A look is complete with accessories: a bag, a hat, and jewelry. Opt for neutral colors for the bag and hat. The bag should be functional, with an adjustable strap for carrying and enough space for essentials. Choose a jewelry set that matches all outfits.
