Postcards, magnets, souvenirs–there are many mementos people like to bring home from vacation. However, there are others that no one wants in their luggage: bedbugs. A certain smell in the hotel room can be an early warning sign. TRAVELBOOK explains what to watch out for–and when it’s best not to unpack your luggage at all.

For many travelers, they are the ultimate nightmare: bedbugs. Once these pesky pests are brought home, daily life can quickly turn upside down. That’s why it’s crucial to not only look closely in the hotel room but also to pay attention to a very specific smell.

How to Recognize Bedbugs in a Hotel Room

Bedbugs are found worldwide, and their presence is not related to poor hygiene. They are usually brought in, such as when staying in infested hotel rooms or apartments. The insects, which can be up to nine millimeters long, hide in clothing, suitcases, and used furniture or mattresses, traveling unnoticed.

To avoid this, when staying in a hotel or vacation rental, you should use not only your eyes but also your nose. Bedbugs can produce a distinctive odor. According to the German Environment Agency, a sweet scent can indicate an infestation. It is often described as almond-like or slightly reminiscent of cognac or overripe raspberries. This smell is caused by a secretion the insects release for communication.

But beware: The smell usually only occurs with a significant infestation. It is often absent in mild cases, so you should not rely on it. Therefore, it’s even more important to thoroughly inspect the room, ideally before bringing in or unpacking your luggage.

Darken the room as much as possible and examine the bed using your phone’s flashlight. Remove the sheets and thoroughly inspect the corners and seams of the mattress. Also, keep an eye on folds and crevices, as the insects particularly like to hide there. If a mattress protector is present, it should also be removed and checked. Even if no bugs are visible, small blood stains on the bedding or mattress can indicate an infestation.

What to Do if Bedbugs Are Found?

If you suspect your room is infested with bedbugs, immediately inform the reception or the accommodation provider. Any possible bite marks should also be documented and, if in doubt, medically examined. It’s important to report the issue on-site and give the provider the opportunity to address it. Under these conditions, there may be grounds for a reduction or compensation claim.

If you fear you have brought the unwanted guests home, it’s best to unpack your suitcase in the bathtub or shower. Then, thoroughly clean the suitcase and wash the clothing at a minimum of 60 degrees Celsius (140 degrees Fahrenheit).
