A solo trip remains a challenge for many travelers, one that commands a great deal of respect. This is often especially true for women who wish to travel alone. The travel company Tui took this as an opportunity to explore the diverse needs of solo female travelers. The result is the “Solo Female Travel Index,” now in its third consecutive year.
Feeling safe and not “out of place” on vacation is a crucial aspect of any trip from which one hopes to return refreshed, energized, and full of new impressions. For solo female travelers, this is often not so easy—after all, the Foreign Office regularly issues warnings specifically directed at them.
Overview
Focus on Safety and Equality
For this reason, the creators of the Tui Solo Female Travel Index focus on safety and equality in their evaluations. They examined, among other things, how safe women feel alone at night in each country and whether men and women have equal rights. Of course, other factors are also relevant for a successful vacation.
Therefore, aspects such as the wealth of cultural assets or the prices for accommodations and meals also influence the index. According to Tui, “transport infrastructure, the density of doctors, access to the ‘morning-after pill,’ and travel costs” were also included in the evaluation.
In total, more than 150 countries were examined in nine categories; the scores from these categories result in an overall score for each country. The final index includes the fifty countries with the best overall scores.
Best Travel Destination for Women in the Tui Solo Female Travel Index
A look at the top 10 of the list by overall score paints a clear picture: Solo female travelers in search of the perfect destination don’t have to look far. All top ten spots in the index are occupied by European countries. This year, Finland secures the top position with an overall score of 80.5 out of 100 points; Sweden follows at a considerable distance with 75 points. Austria, Belgium, and Denmark share third place with 73.5 points each.

Countries Where Women Feel Safest
When considering only the aspect of safety, a different picture emerges. For this, Tui refers to the GIWPS Women Peace & Security Index. It provides insights into how safe women aged 15 and older feel alone at night in each location. Finland also takes the top spot in this category with a score of 37.5 out of 40 possible points, followed by Denmark (33.5 points). Sweden also makes it to the podium with a score of 32.5.
Interesting Aspects and Decision-Making Aid, but …
Those who wish to view the complete Tui Solo Female Travel Index will find that it highlights many different aspects of travel, not all of which necessarily apply to solo travel, especially for solo female travelers.
