When traveling with your partner, many couples become intimate sooner or later. Completely natural, one might think—and yet, depending on the vacation country, you could get into trouble. Because the most beautiful triviality in the world is still taboo in many places, and there are some truly insane sex laws. TRAVELBOOK has collected the most absurd, funny, and nonsensical cases.
No Chess During Sex
- In Colombia, there is a truly absurd sex regulation, at least in the city of Cali: When a couple comes together for the first time, the bride’s mother must be present in the room to witness the girl’s virginity.
- This would probably only appeal to real nerds: In Estonia, it is legally prohibited to play chess during sex.
- In North Carolina in the USA, even married couples are not allowed to sleep together in a hotel room unless there are separate beds with a minimum distance of 60 centimeters between them.
- In Hungary’s capital, Budapest, leaving the light on during sex is illegal. This even applies to married couples in their own homes.

- In Uruguay, there is allegedly a law that allows a cheated husband to take truly drastic measures. If he catches his wife and her lover in flagrante, he can supposedly choose between two punishments: killing both on the spot or castrating the man and cutting off his wife’s nose. Latinos may be passionate, but this “law” is unlikely to be from modern times.
- Brush your teeth and skip the garlic: In Alexandria, Minnesota (USA), it is illegal to have sex with bad breath.

Firing a Weapon is Forbidden
- When it comes to crazy (sex) laws, the USA naturally appears multiple times: For example, in the state of Wisconsin, it is legally prohibited for men to fire a weapon during sex—in line with the motto “Make Love, not War.”
- In Italy, a fine is imposed if you are caught having sex on the beach. The same act in a car is permissible, as long as the car has tinted windows.
- Again in Italy: In Siena, women named Maria are not allowed to work as prostitutes. This is because the names of saints cannot be used for advertising.
- It becomes completely absurd in Hawaii (USA): If a man is caught having sex with a girl under 18, the child’s parents must go to jail. The reason: the failure to raise their daughter properly.
Hands Off Porcupines
- In Israel, pornography is banned. Anyone caught watching sex films risks a prison sentence of up to three years. This also applies if you watch the porn channel in a hotel.
- And again, the USA: Sex with a porcupine is legally prohibited in Florida. Sometimes you wonder how such laws come about…
- In Riverside, California (USA), couples are only allowed to kiss if they have first dabbed their lips with rose water.
- Crazy? Not at all—in London, UK, it is prohibited to have sex on a parked motorcycle. Also, asking strangers for a one-night stand here can potentially be illegal.
- In Santa Cruz, Bolivia, no man is allowed to have sex with a woman and her daughter at the same time.
- In the Buddhist kingdom of Bhutan, on the eastern edge of the Himalayas, younger brothers are prohibited from having sex as long as their older brother is still a virgin.
- On the Pacific island of Guam, it is legally forbidden for virgins to marry. Therefore, it is not uncommon for men to be paid to deflower women. The law was enacted by a man, by the way.
- Finally, the USA again: In Tremonton, Utah, it is illegal to have sex in a moving ambulance. As punishment, HER name is published in the newspaper, while HE has nothing to fear.
It is difficult to find reliable sources for all these laws and rules. Many circulate on the internet, but whether they still exist is not always easy to verify. And even if they do exist, one probably doesn’t need to worry too much about being punished for these “offenses.”
