Passports offer many freedoms, as they allow their holders to fly and enter wherever they want. At least theoretically, this depends on the country of origin and other factors. While passport prices in the European Union are mostly moderate, some countries charge quite a bit for their passports. One country in particular.
It certainly stands out–blue and adorned with images of a kangaroo and emu on the front. The dark red German passport, with its much lonelier and harsher-looking emblem, pales in comparison. However, given the price difference, most people probably still prefer the German passport, regardless of where they want to live. The most expensive passport in the world comes from Australia–and it costs 412 Australian dollars, equivalent to 232.16 euros. For now. Starting in January, the document is set to become even more expensive.
Three Times as Expensive as the German Passport
Several media reports have recently noted another price increase for the Australian passport. For instance, the Australian publication “Time Out” writes that the cost of the ten-year passport for adults is expected to rise by another 5 to 10 Australian dollars starting January 1, 2026, in line with annual adjustments to the consumer price index.
If true, the Australian adult passport will cost between 417 and 422 Australian dollars from January, which currently equates to about 235 to 238 euros. And this applies even from the age of 16. Children under 16 in Australia receive a passport valid for only five years, currently costing 208 Australian dollars (117.21 euros). The five-year passport is also available for adults over 75. The official fee page has yet to mention the planned price increase.
For comparison: The German passport for all German citizens over 24 years old has cost 70 euros since January 2024, according to the website of the Federal Ministry of the Interior. Those under 24 pay 37.50 euros for the standard passport. Additional costs may apply for express passports, applications outside the place of residence, extra pages, etc.

Price Increase of Nearly 100 Australian Dollars in Three Years
The Australian passport is not only more than three times as expensive as the one here. The costs for Australian passports rise every year, and not insignificantly. According to the migration law firm “This is Australian Lawyers,” the price of the Australian passport has increased by almost 100 Australian dollars within three years: As of March 2023, Australians paid 325 Australian dollars (183.14 euros) for the ten-year passport, by July it was already 398 Australian dollars (224.27 euros), and now it is expected to be up to 422 Australian dollars.
According to the firm, the comparatively high price is “attributed to the high level of security and technology embedded in the document, including advanced fraud protection features and sophisticated production requirements.” After Australia, Mexico has the second most expensive passport in the world at 4,120 pesos (195.25 euros).
