On a hot beach day, snagging a spot under the beach umbrella often makes you feel instantly better. After all, the shade protects you from the blazing sun. But if you still find yourself sweating, it’s not just your imagination. Researchers have now explained why it often feels significantly less cool under a beach umbrella than you might expect.

There’s no question that beach umbrellas reliably protect against harmful UV radiation, reducing the risk of sunburn. However, they only partially help against the heat itself. This conclusion comes from a study by biometeorologist Georg Wohlfahrt from the University of Innsbruck, presented at the General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union.

The Beach Umbrella Becomes a Heat Source

The reason is surprisingly simple: While the beach umbrella blocks direct sunlight, its fabric heats up significantly in the sun. Depending on conditions such as color, material, or shape, the surface can reach temperatures of around 70 degrees Celsius.

Like any hot object, a heated beach umbrella emits heat back into its surroundings—in the form of thermal radiation. Some of this radiation reaches those seeking shelter beneath it, partially negating the cooling effect of the shade.

Why the Beach Umbrella Cools Better or Worse

To determine the actual cooling effect, researchers developed a computer model. They considered not only air temperature but also wind, humidity, sun position, and the heat radiated from the sand and the heated beach umbrella.

The result: In about 95 percent of all calculated scenarios, the heat load under a beach umbrella was lower than in direct sunlight. However, the difference was usually smaller than many might expect—on average, the perceived heat load decreased by only about one degree Celsius.

The local conditions are crucial: A light breeze cools the hot umbrella better, enhancing the shade’s effect. On windless days, however, the fabric can heat up particularly strongly. In a few calculated scenarios, it was even slightly warmer under the beach umbrella than in direct sunlight.

In the Italian resort of Lignano, there is a high heat load in mid-August. While it feels slightly more comfortable with a beach umbrella, the difference is only about 0.6 degrees Celsius. The umbrella helps, but one shouldn’t expect miracles.

It’s different on Rügen. There, the overall heat load is significantly lower, yet the beach umbrella has the greatest effect. The perceived temperature drops by about 1.3 degrees Celsius. The reason: The combination of stronger winds and more moderate temperatures works in the umbrella’s favor.

The most surprising result is for Rio de Janeiro. There, the calculations showed it was even slightly warmer under the beach umbrella—albeit by only 0.1 degrees Celsius. This is because, at noon, the sun in the Brazilian summer is almost directly overhead. As a result, less direct sunlight hits the body. The advantage of the umbrella shrinks—while the heated fabric continues to radiate heat.

UV Protection Remains the Key Advantage

Nevertheless, researchers emphasize: No one should forgo the beach umbrella. Its greatest benefit remains blocking direct sunlight and harmful UV radiation. In the future, beach umbrellas could become even more effective—such as through materials that reflect more sunlight and thus heat up less.
