The Autonomous Province of Trentino, which forms the southern part of the Trentino-South Tyrol region, is among the most beautiful and popular vacation destinations in Italy. It’s no wonder, as Trentino offers a stunning and diverse landscape, with mountains over 11,500 feet high, picturesque valleys, clear lakes, and exciting cities, foremost the provincial capital, Trento. Trentino also shares a part of the northern shore of Lake Garda.
Despite its beauty and tourist significance, Trentino faces a problem common to many regions across Italy: increasing depopulation, especially in rural villages. Many people are moving to cities, leading to declining birth rates. Trentino is now countering this trend with an ambitious program aimed at attracting new residents. Financially, it goes a step further than other initiatives: As the Autonomous Province of Trentino recently announced, people who move to one of more than 30 selected communities can receive up to 100,000 euros.
The Conditions Set by the Province of Trentino for the 100,000 Euros
Even in this case, new residents don’t receive this substantial sum as a gift. First, purchasing an uninhabited property in one of the listed communities is mandatory. Applicants can receive a subsidy of up to 20,000 euros for the purchase. An additional subsidy of up to 80,000 euros is available for renovation.
In principle, anyone can apply for the subsidies in Trentino, including German citizens. However, the condition is that the property buyer must live there for at least 10 years. Alternatively, according to the province’s press release, they can rent it “at a moderate price” to people who relocate their residence to the respective community.

These Communities in Trentino Are Looking for New Residents
So, if you’ve dreamed of acquiring a charming vacation home, you probably won’t qualify as an applicant. However, for those already considering emigrating to Italy and envisioning life in a village, this initiative is certainly interesting. The communities seeking new residents are Altavalle, Bleggio Superiore, Bondone, Borgo Chiese, Bresimo, Canal San Bovo, Castel Condino, Castello Tesino, Cis, Cinte Tesino, Dambel, Frassilongo, Grigno, Livo, Luserna, Mezzano, Novella, Ospedaletto, Peio, Pieve di Bono-Prezzo, Pieve Tesino, Rabbi, Rumo, Sagron Mis, Segonzano, Sover, Terragnolo, Tre Ville, Valdaone, Valfloriana, Vallarsa, and Vermiglio.
Maurizio Fugatti, the president of the Autonomous Province of Trento, announced on Tuesday during a meeting with the mayors of the participating communities that a final decision on the program is expected between April 20 and 25. The call for applications is set to begin immediately afterward.
