Whether on the North Sea or France’s Atlantic coast, coastal erosion is no longer a rarity and has now reached Lake Garda. The Corno Beach, also known as Spiaggia al Corno, is particularly affected. The popular bay is even at risk of disappearing completely. TRAVELBOOK explains what’s behind this.
Every year, numerous vacationers are drawn to Lake Garda. Among the popular spots is Spiaggia al Corno, located between the center of Garda and the Punta San Vigilio peninsula. However, it may become increasingly difficult for visitors to find a spot on the ever-shrinking beach. A citizens’ movement blames a specific cause for this.
Overview
Shipping Traffic Under Suspicion
The pebble beach Spiaggia al Corno has been struggling with massive erosion for some time. The Lega Navale Italiana, a nonprofit association promoting water sports and coastal protection in Italy, along with a local opposition group, have already approached the municipality and the shipping company “Navigarda.” They blame the daily excursion ships. Their high speed is said to cause strong waves that significantly accelerate the erosion of the beach. As reported by “Südtirol News,” not only are parts of the shoreline threatened, but also sailing courses for children in the bay and small boats. People could be hit by the high waves and seriously injured.
As reported by the news portal “InItalia Virgilio,” the president of the Lega Navale Italiana called for targeted measures against the waves in a letter—such as shipping corridors marked by buoys and adherence to speed limits. He also criticized the high frequency of Navigarda trips, which visit the bay of Garda up to 27 times a day.
However, the company denies the allegations, pointing out that public line ships are exempt from rules on shoreline distances, speed limits, and navigation bans. The municipality now plans to hold talks with the parties involved. So far, no agreement is in sight on how to counteract the erosion of the popular beach section.
