What truly makes a city attractive? Is it famous landmarks, spectacular architecture, or unique local experiences? An international research team explored this question and created a ranking of the world’s most attractive cities for 2026. Topping the list is a metropolis that has been one of the most popular travel destinations for decades.

The Global Tourism City Attractiveness Index 2026, created by the Korean market research institute Yanolja Research in collaboration with Purdue University in the U.S. and Kyung Hee University in Seoul, evaluated online posts from travelers about over 200 cities worldwide. Social media posts on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and X were analyzed in 14 different languages. The evaluation is based on landscape, culture, experiences, and hospitality.

New York Leads the Ranking

New York takes the top spot. The U.S. metropolis scores particularly well with its enormous international recognition and the positive perception of many visitors. Paris follows in second place, a city that has been among the most visited in the world for years.

Japan managed to secure multiple spots in the top ten: Osaka and Kyoto take third and fourth places. They are followed by Seoul, London, Rome, Bangkok, Okinawa, and Chicago.

Fame and Popularity Equally Considered

Two factors were considered for the ranking. One is the global recognition of a city, and the other is the mood and experiences travelers associate with it. Both categories were equally weighted. According to the study authors, the ranking aims to show not just which cities attract the most visitors, but rather which destinations leave particularly positive memories for tourists.

Interestingly, the order changes when only attractiveness is considered. In this evaluation, Osaka (large photo above) and Kyoto are ahead of New York. The two Japanese cities receive particularly positive reviews from travelers, even outperforming the American metropolis.

Germany does not fare particularly well in the attractiveness ranking. The only German city in the top 50 is Berlin (ranked 41st). Munich is at 60th place, with Cologne (111), Frankfurt (113), and Hamburg (117) trailing far behind.

Criticism of the Methodology

The results are based solely on the evaluation of social networks and online platforms. Travelers who publish little or no content online are hardly considered.

Additionally, particularly well-known cities can benefit from their strong online presence. Metropolises like New York, Paris, or London are mentioned much more frequently than smaller destinations, which can increase their visibility in the ranking. The user structure of social networks also varies significantly by region. In some countries, platforms like Instagram or X are used much more intensively than in others.

Moreover, positive posts on social media do not necessarily reflect the actual quality of a destination. Users often share particularly beautiful or extraordinary experiences, while negative experiences are less frequently published. Therefore, the ranking primarily measures public perception and digital enthusiasm for a city, rather than objective factors such as safety, cost level, infrastructure, or sustainability.
