Segovia is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Castile, alongside Toledo and Avila. Founded more than 3,000 years ago, it is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. TRAVELBOOK has the best tips for Segovia.
Segovia is located about 90 kilometers north of Madrid and has around 50,000 residents. It was home to one of the most important Roman military bases on the Iberian Peninsula. The aqueduct from the first century AD supplied the city’s residents with drinking water from the Rio River until about 40 years ago. The 728-meter-long and approximately 28-meter-high structure is situated in the middle of the old town and is perhaps the city’s most spectacular attraction.

The Alcazar from the 11th century, a fortress visible for kilometers at the western edge of the old town, is at least as interesting for visitors. The perhaps most impregnable palace complex in Spain was repeatedly the residence of the Castilian royal family.
Other Attractions in and Around Segovia
In the old town of Segovia, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1985, there are also a number of noteworthy churches. These include the late Gothic cathedral from the 16th century and about a dozen Romanesque churches. The Plaza Medina del Campo is particularly charming.
A few kilometers southeast of Segovia is the “Spanish Versailles.” This refers to the royal palace La Granja from the 18th century, with its magnificent Baroque park and the most beautiful fountains in Spain. Today, a museum is housed in the former summer residence of the Spanish kings.
Traveling to Segovia
The fastest way to reach Segovia from Madrid is by car via the Autopista AP-61. The royal palace La Granja can be reached from Segovia by car via the CL-601 road. The train ride from the Spanish capital to Segovia is possible directly from Madrid-Chamartín station and takes about an hour.
Those driving to Segovia should look for one of the numerous parking lots on the Cuesta de los Hoyos ring road. From there, you also have a magnificent view of the Alcazar and the old town.
