Moneglia is located about halfway between Genoa and La Spezia on the Riviera Levante. It is a small town with a direct view of sunsets over the sea. This is just one of many advantages of a vacation on the eastern side of the Ligurian Mediterranean coast.
In Moneglia, the rush to exclusive Portofino or the Cinque Terre National Park is much less noticeable. The fishing village, with a population of just under 3,000, is protected by a green hill range and lies right in between. Local day-trippers often travel by regional train to sunbathe. The smaller hotels in the center and near the beach promenade are usually fully booked in the summer months of July and August. Generally, Moneglia on the Riviera Levante is more relaxed.
Typical Ligurian Town
Moneglia is a typical town in Liguria with narrow streets leading to small, winding squares. The houses are often colorful, and outside the high season, fishing boats lie on the beach. Along the main street and the palm-lined promenade, cafés alternate with restaurants. Here, you can enjoy a relaxed evening stroll after dinner. About 15 minutes up the road on the stone slope, there is a campsite with a beautiful view of the bay, the sea, and the sunset.
In Moneglia, the so-called Blue Flag has been a tradition since 1990—a record in Italy! The Bandiera blu is an internationally recognized seal of approval for clean seawater, a clean beach, and environmentally friendly infrastructure.
Perfect for Excursions in the Area
From Moneglia, you can enjoy wonderful hikes on small paths along the coast below the high slopes with olive groves and gardens to Deiva Marina or in the other direction to the beach of Trigoso. The regional train takes you quickly to Levanto and the Cinque Terre villages of Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, Riomaggiore, and to La Spezia. It’s also only about half an hour by local train to the regional capital, Genoa.
