As a teenager, I spent every free minute with friends on Sylt, while I used to scoff at the Baltic Sea. That changed when my now-wife showed me her personal Baltic paradise on the Polish island of Wolin. Since then, I’ve been drawn regularly to the Polish coast. Poland has become a second home for me. Although more German tourists are discovering the region, there are still some special places and experiences that make my vacation unique each time.
Why I Keep Going Back to Wolin
For more than ten years, I’ve regularly spent my vacations on the Polish Baltic Sea. The combination of long beaches, warm hospitality, and diverse leisure activities continues to captivate me. At the same time, I’ve noticed the region is becoming increasingly popular with German tourists.
However, prices are rising here too. The economic boom is clearly noticeable. Still, I find plenty of ways to enjoy a lovely family vacation without breaking the budget.

Home Cooking Like It Used to Be
One of my favorite tips applies not only to the Baltic coast but to all of Poland. As early as the late 19th century, affordable eateries called “Bar Mleczny” emerged. These “milk bars” became simple canteens for workers during the Eastern Bloc era. Often, a “Babcia” in an apron stood behind the food counter, preparing traditional home-cooked meals.
Many of these places still exist today. They’ve become more modern but are often still surprisingly affordable. In Międzyzdroje, or Misdroy, I particularly enjoy going to Bistro 777. There, I paid about 140 zloty for three dishes for an adult and two very hungry children, plus coleslaw, a drink, two fruit yogurt shakes, a large portion of blueberry pierogi, and a cola. That’s about 32 euros.
Ice Cream Now Costs Almost as Much as in Germany
After a meal, ice cream is often a must for me on vacation. However, the prices are now surprising. In recent years, costs have risen significantly. You can hardly get a scoop for less than nine zloty, or about two euros.
If I’m going to treat myself to ice cream, I prefer something special. That’s why I like to go to Wisełka, the neighboring town of Misdroy. At “Miód Malina,” there are unique flavors like “apple pie” or “lemon cake.” The ice cream shop is located in a small village square with a playground and small shops. It’s much more relaxed there than in the big tourist spots.

Hossoland Has Won Over My Family
Amusement parks are popping up in many vacation spots. Some are overpriced or offer little new. I was pleasantly surprised by the new amusement park Hossoland.
The park is about an hour’s drive from Misdroy on the way to Kolberg. The facility is designed as a Viking village and offers attractions for different age groups. There are several roller coasters, Viking ships with water attractions, and numerous other rides.
For kids, it’s a real highlight. My tip: Look for discount promotions and group rates before visiting. We paid about 100 euros for a full day for four people.
The Lakes of Wolin Are a Hidden Gem
Many tourists think of Wolin only in terms of the sea. However, the island has numerous beautiful lakes. Some are located in the middle of the national park and offer a peaceful alternative to the often crowded beaches.
You can swim, fish, or pedal boat there. On hot summer days, I especially enjoy the relaxed atmosphere at the lakes. One thing you shouldn’t forget: mosquito spray is a must.

Bison and Wolves in the National Park
When we’re out with the kids, we often take a trip to the wildlife enclosure in Wolin National Park. It’s just a few minutes’ walk from the center of Misdroy.
There, you can observe bison, wolves, eagles, and deer. The facility is open daily from May 1 to September 30, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Children up to seven years old have free admission, while adults pay seven zloty, or about 1.60 euros.
Where I Escape the Beach Crowds
The beaches of Misdroy are often completely crowded during the high season. However, families can find beach bars, restaurants, and playgrounds right on the sand.
When I seek peace, I walk a bit along the coast or drive a little further and then walk through the woods to the beach. With some patience, you can still find secluded sections where there are significantly fewer people.
