River cruises are still often seen as a classic vacation option for an older audience. The U.S. cruise line Celebrity Cruises apparently wants to change this image. With modern ships, flexible dining options, and hotel luxury on the water, the concept is striking a chord: The first trips of the new river cruise brand were sold out within six minutes. Now, the first ship has reached an important milestone.
The “Celebrity Compass,” the first ship of the new brand Celebrity River Cruises, has been launched for the first time. Following the so-called float-out in the Netherlands, the interior will now be completed before the ship is set to begin its inaugural season on the Rhine and Danube in August 2027.
Remarkably, the project is already receiving significant attention before its launch. Celebrity Cruises, previously known primarily for ocean cruises, is entering the European river cruise market for the first time. Demand seems high: According to the cruise line, the preferred booking access for the first trips of the 2027 season was snapped up within six minutes. The company now plans to expand the fleet to a total of 20 river ships by 2031.

River Cruises to Become More Modern and Luxurious
Celebrity is focusing on a concept that is meant to differ significantly from many traditional river cruises. Instead of fixed meal times and a rather traditional onboard routine, flexibility and hotel comfort are the focus.
There will be round-the-clock dining options, including breakfast via room service. Several restaurants and bars, spacious outdoor areas, and an infinity pool on the sun deck are intended to offer an experience similar to modern ocean cruises.
Particularly striking is a cantilevered restaurant platform where guests can dine practically over the water. The cruise line is also focusing on a higher level of comfort in the cabins, with king-size beds in all categories.
First Trips Lead Over the Danube–at a Hefty Price
Among the first offered routes is a seven-day journey from Budapest to Vilshofen in Bavaria. Along the way, the ship stops in cities such as Bratislava and Vienna as well as in the Wachau. Other trips lead on the Rhine and Danube through some of Europe’s most popular river cruise regions.
The new offering is not exactly cheap, however. Depending on the date and cabin category, a one-week trip costs several thousand dollars per person. Even the more affordable options are over $3,000 per guest. Included are beverages, Wi-Fi, meals, and a daily shore excursion.
Whether Celebrity will permanently change the European river cruise market remains to be seen. However, the initial booking rush shows that many travelers are apparently open to a more modern and luxurious understanding of river cruises. Instead of the often somewhat outdated image, the cruise line is focusing on design, flexibility, and hotel comfort–and seems to be hitting the zeitgeist perfectly.
