Which indoor pools in Germany are the best? The travel provider “Wellnessurlaub.com” kicks off this year’s indoor pool season with a ranking aimed at answering this question.
Fall is indoor pool season. When temperatures drop outside, leaves turn beautiful shades of red, orange, and brown, and you start needing not just a jacket but also a hat to brace against the chilly outdoors, there’s sometimes nothing better than spending an afternoon at an indoor pool. Whether for focused lap swimming or relaxing in a thermal bath, a visit to the indoor pool quickly reduces stress and provides a warm, inner feeling. Especially when the pool itself is a place of comfort.
A first indication of which indoor pool near you might be such a place can be found in the ranking by the travel provider “Wellnessurlaub.com.” They ranked indoor pools in 200 German cities based on their Google reviews. To do this, they evaluated around 720,000 reviews on the Google platform from 505 indoor pools across Germany.
Germany’s Indoor Pools Generally Good
Overall, Germany’s indoor pools received positive feedback in this evaluation: On average, the 505 pools received 4.09 stars. Thirteen of them received 4.5 stars or more. More than 70 percent of the pools were rated with at least 4 stars. According to “Wellnessurlaub.com,” sports pools are particularly well-rated, with an average of 4.16 stars. They are followed by thermal baths with 4.14 stars. Traditional indoor pools bring up the rear with 4.09 stars.
In a comparison of federal states, Thuringia and Saxony lead with an average of 4.23 stars. Bavaria takes third place with an average of 4.17 stars. In contrast, the city-states of Berlin, Hamburg, and Bremen occupy the last three places in the ranking.

This Is Germany’s Best Indoor Pool
The first place in this year’s indoor pool ranking goes to a small community pool in North Rhine-Westphalia: Bürgerbad Handorf in Münster is the best-rated indoor pool in the evaluation, with 4.7 stars. Although this rating is based on only 81 votes, the reviewers seem to agree. According to the travel provider, guests particularly appreciate the low admission prices, the toddler area, and the overall family-friendly atmosphere of the small, volunteer-run pool on the outskirts of Münster.
In addition to this independent community pool, many other indoor pools in the western German state were evaluated for the ranking. A total of 184 indoor pools from North Rhine-Westphalia were included. Four of them made it into the top 10.
Third Place Also in NRW
The second place in this year’s indoor pool ranking, with 4.6 stars, goes to the Robert-Koch-Schwimmhalle in Halle (Saale) in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. It is part of a sports campus with an Olympic training center, sports boarding school, and sports schools. During the week, competitive athletes primarily use the indoor pool with the 50-meter pool at its center. On weekends, recreational guests are also allowed to swim there. According to the travel provider, the 448 Google reviews particularly mention fair admission prices, a high level of cleanliness, and friendly staff.
Third place in the ranking goes again to North Rhine-Westphalia, to the Schwimmsportleistungszentrum Wuppertal. The swimming pool also received 4.6 stars from 338 reviewers, putting it on par with the Robert-Koch-Schwimmhalle. Like the latter, the Wuppertal indoor pool focuses on competitive sports. It features an Olympic 50-meter pool and a teaching pool with a counter-current system.
