When traveling, you not only discover new places or have unique experiences–it’s often the encounters with locals that make a vacation even more special. That’s why we wanted to know: Which German state is the most hospitable? You decided! In the large reader vote, most votes went to Bavaria–earning it the TRAVELBOOK Award 2026 as “Germany’s Most Hospitable State.”
All of Germany’s states were, of course, up for selection. In the voting, Bavaria clearly stood out–with more than 26 percent of all votes cast in the category. But why Bavaria, of all places? TRAVELBOOK editor Katharina Regenthal has her own experiences–and here she tries to explain why Bavaria also tops her list.
Only Good Experiences in Bavaria
With 16 states, it’s not easy to choose just one that you find particularly hospitable. Places that are especially popular with vacationers might have a slight advantage. Bavaria is, after all, one of the most popular states among German tourists–and probably had a small edge there.
And yet, I believe Bavaria was rightly awarded the TRAVELBOOK Award as “Germany’s Most Hospitable State.” Personally, I’ve had only wonderful experiences during my vacations in Bavaria.

Hosts with Special Charm
During a vacation in the small town of Inzell in the Traunstein district a few years ago, we stayed in a small guesthouse. The hostess there was warm, helpful, and gave us great tips for the region without being intrusive, sharing stories from the past. Particularly fascinating: She experienced the Königssee completely freezing over and was able to walk on it. This certainly happens in other states too–but in Bavaria, I’ve always felt especially welcomed and warmly received.
Similarly, at the beginning of the year, when we spent a few days in Mittenwald. Even the journey was so uncomplicated and warm that we immediately felt welcome. Our host, a young Bavarian from the region who also worked for the mountain rescue service, had a special charm. He gave us helpful tips, pleaded with us as Berlin tourists not to hike up mountains in sneakers, and took care of all our needs.
Throughout Germany, there are many such people whose hospitality makes a stay truly special–but I’ve personally had the best experiences in Bavaria!
Methodology for the TRAVELBOOK Award
Again this year, we say: All nominated regions, countries, and the like for the TRAVELBOOK Awards are already winners. Even if they didn’t achieve overall victory. This also applies to all other states.
The TRAVELBOOK editorial team asked the community on Facebook and Instagram for help and consulted experts from the travel industry to create the shortlist. For the first time this year, not only TRAVELBOOK readers but also BILD readers voted. In total, more than 150,000 votes were cast to determine the trend travel destinations for 2027.
