At the TRAVELBOOK Award on September 22, 2026, alongside many other exciting trend travel destinations for the coming year, the most beautiful village in Germany was also chosen. Among them: the artist village of Fischerhude in the northwestern state of Lower Saxony.
Fischerhude in Lower Saxony
Not far from the Hanseatic city of Bremen lies the tranquil artist and farming village of Fischerhude. Surrounded by vast meadow landscapes and several branches of the Wümme River, it is situated on an elongated dune ridge. According to the information page Flecken Ottersberg, the meadows of the Wümme lowlands are very wet and are regularly flooded. This gives them “a unique ecological diversity and an almost untouched-looking landscape.” Fischerhude is a district of the Flecken—a historical form of municipality—Ottersberg in the district of Verden in the state of Lower Saxony.
In the village center of Fischerhude, picturesque half-timbered houses with some thatched roofs line cobblestone streets, old oaks, and alders. In addition, there are numerous old farmhouses. These traditional buildings house the residents of Fischerhude, their crafts and agricultural products, as well as small cafes and restaurants and the guests of the idyllic village. According to its own information page, it was first mentioned in a document in 1124.
What is special about Fischerhude in Lower Saxony?
First of all, Fischerhude is a tranquil place. A place of peace and reflection, a place where visitors can relax and enjoy life. Not least, Fischerhude is known as a village of artists—and has been since the early 20th century.
Fischerhude’s origin as an artist village began, according to the information page “bremen.de,” after Otto Modersohn discovered the village for himself in 1896. Subsequently, Fischerhude attracted more and more painters and other artists, including sculptors and musicians. And this remains true today. The galleries in Fischerhude display current works as well as those of the first artists of Fischerhude.

What can you experience in Fischerhude?
From Bremen, the approximately 27-kilometer distant Fischerhude is a popular destination for a bike tour. On the way, you pass through wide, green landscapes crisscrossed by waterways.
In the village itself, it is particularly the art collections that are of interest to visitors of the artist’s village. For example, the Otto Modersohn Museum and Buthmanns Hof feature changing exhibitions of local artists. Events where visitors can get creative themselves are also regularly offered in Fischerhude.
Also worth a visit, according to the Bremen information page, is the local history museum. It is located in the Heimathaus Irmintraut, one of more than ten old farms in Fischerhude. It is believed that this historic building has stood on the site since 1768.
