Soft Christmas music plays from the speakers, and the scent of mulled wine and gingerbread fills the air. To get into the holiday spirit, all you really need is a visit to a Christmas market–and there are quite a few in Saxony. TRAVELBOOK presents some of the most beautiful ones.

Saxony boasts some of the most beautiful Christmas markets–a statement many would at least partially agree with. After all, Saxony is home to the Dresden Striezelmarkt, Germany’s oldest Christmas market. But Saxony also calls itself the land of castles. There are numerous castles and fortresses that exude a special atmosphere, especially during Advent. Often, small Christmas markets are held there. Find out which ones you shouldn’t miss here.

If you want to visit the Herrnhuter Wichtelmarkt, you have only a brief opportunity. The Christmas market is held only on the first Saturday of Advent. It’s worth the visit: The famous Herrnhuter Star Factory invites you to a small Christmas stroll–and once it gets dark, the Christmas lights are ceremoniously turned on. In addition to the classic stars, other handicrafts and typical Christmas treats are offered.

A historically romantic Christmas market awaits you on Königstein high above the Elbe. If you like it rustic, this is the place for you. The stalls are hand-built, and punch steams in large copper kettles over an open fire. A giant candle arch with a fortress motif and one of the largest Herrnhuter stars in the world, shining over the Elbe Valley, also contribute to the Christmas atmosphere. There’s entertainment for all ages–from puppet theater to storytelling sessions and fairy tale plays.
