Roaring loudly, often crowded with visitors, yet an experience not to be missed: The Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen is one of Switzerland’s most visited natural attractions, drawing millions of people each year.
Visitors here share the view with many others but witness a natural highlight that impresses with its power and energy. Why the trip is worth it despite the hustle and how best to plan it, you’ll find out here.
Those arriving via Schaffhausen are greeted by a picturesque old town and the distinctive Munot fortress. Beautiful—but in Switzerland, almost not a rarity. The real attraction is just a few kilometers away: the largest and most powerful waterfall in Europe.
Impressive Natural Spectacle
Its 23-meter height initially seems surprisingly low compared to its 150-meter width. But given the volume of water—up to 600,000 liters per second cascading over the edge in summer—respect quickly grows. It sprays, roars, and swirls so intensely that you can feel the mist from a distance and quickly realize the sheer force behind it.
And that’s what makes this natural spectacle so impressive: You quickly realize how small you feel as a visitor next to the force of the water. The most intense experience is right on site. Numerous platforms along the panoramic path lead close to the Rhine Falls, accessible via a sometimes steep stairway that winds along the river. Particularly impressive is the “Fischetz” platform, where you are almost at eye level with the edge of the falls.
Up Close by Boat
If you want to get even closer, you can take a boat into the Rhine basin. Various tours go directly in front of the waterfall and offer a perspective away from the often crowded viewing platforms.
Even more spectacular is the trip to the distinctive rock in the middle of the Rhine Falls: It is actually accessible. Adventurous visitors can dock there, climb up a secured staircase, and experience the waterfall up close, including a direct view of the edge. An impressive experience where you definitely won’t stay dry.

Best in Summer
A visit to the Rhine Falls is possible year-round, but it is especially impressive in summer. Then, the snowmelt in the Alps results in particularly large volumes of water in the Rhine. However, the weather also plays a role: If rain is absent for a long time and the water level is low, the natural spectacle can appear significantly less spectacular.
Sunny weather with a blue sky is worthwhile anyway, not only for the mood but also for the view. The panorama with Laufen Castle, the Schlössli Wörth, and the beautiful Rhine bridge with its elegant arches is particularly beautiful in good weather.
Expensive, but Typically Swiss
What you should know before visiting: The prices are typically Swiss. Boat trips and other activities around the waterfall are comparatively expensive. For a roughly 15-minute round trip, you pay about 13 euros per person; including a stop at the rock, it’s quickly about 25 euros. Access to Laufen Castle also costs extra. Even for coffee and cake with a view of the waterfall, you should plan on at least 15 euros in the upscale restaurant.
If you want to save money, you don’t have to miss out on the experience. Several beautiful circular paths along the Rhine offer free viewpoints from which the Rhine Falls can also be admired. The walkable Rhine bridge also offers a great view. The proximity to Germany and Lake Constance makes the Rhine Falls a popular excursion destination—and rightly so.
