1. Trou aux Biches Beach – in Triolet

Snow-white sand, crystal-clear water, and lush green palms–right in the coastal town of Triolet lies the beach oasis Trou aux Biches. This beach is easily accessible by bus from the city center for a small fee. The scenery you find yourself in resembles a postcard and is surely a common reason for a vacation in Mauritius. On-site, there is a private beach area as well as a public section. Adjacent to this, there are public restrooms and showers, even free parking, and good food is also available. The beach section is bordered underwater by a large coral reef, which significantly reduces the waves. Therefore, Trou aux Biches Beach is particularly suitable for snorkeling, as the water is calm and there are plenty of colorful fish. Our tip: The sunsets here are a perfect ten out of ten!

2. Le Morne Beach – in Le Morne

Coconut palms, kitesurfing, and the mighty backdrop of Le Morne Brabant in the background–we are certainly not alone in thinking that Le Morne Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Mauritius. Yet, this beach, divided into a private and a public area, is never overcrowded. On-site, there are free parking spaces for the public beach section, sanitary facilities, and several snack stands. The beach is also appreciated for its crystal-clear water, cleanliness, and the colorful activity of kitesurfing sails. So, if you’re interested in surfing and kiting, this is the place to be. However, snorkeling is not recommended–at least in the public beach area–as there is simply nothing to see. Our tip focuses on a dark chapter of the island: Opposite the public beach, at the foot of Le Morne Brabant, there is a memorial to commemorate the victims of colonial slavery. Various sculptures remember those who, as a result of racism, leapt to their deaths from Le Morne Brabant.

3. Flic en Flac Beach – in Flic en Flac

Colorful hustle and bustle, the smell of Mauritian cuisine, and lively chatter–there’s a lot going on at Mauritius’ most famous beach! Flic en Flac is located on the west coast of the island, where it is significantly warmer and less windy than on the eastern side. Flic en Flac Beach is not only by far the longest beach in Mauritius but also hosts one of the longest coral reefs. The beach is located in the former fishing village of Flic en Flac, which is now a popular resort. Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius, is only about thirty kilometers away and is well connected to Flic en Flac Beach by bus. Our tip: The beach is well-stocked with a variety of street food stands. The opportunity to indulge in typical Mauritian cuisine is so great that Flic en Flac, despite the always large crowd of travelers, is one of the most beautiful beaches in Mauritius for us.

4. Tamarin Bay Beach – near Flic en Flac

High waves, soft sand, and many dolphins–south of the well-known Flic en Flac Beach lies this somewhat smaller beach. Tamarin Bay Beach is especially known for certain marine inhabitants, as the absence of a reef off the coast results in unusually high waves. This not only appeals to those seeking tranquility but also to playful dolphins, which is why they frequently gather in this bay. For many, Tamarin Bay Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Mauritius for this reason. Our tip: Dolphin watching with motorboats is particularly popular at this beach. So popular that it is strongly advised to avoid participating in this mass chase. Instead, the animals can also be well observed from the beach! Especially in the morning between six and seven o’clock, this is an unforgettable experience that makes getting up early worthwhile–promise!

5. Blue Bay Beach – near Mahébourg

White sand, light blue water, and a breathtaking variety of colorful underwater life–Blue Bay Beach is the ultimate snorkeling paradise. Due to the gentle waves at this beach, snorkeling here is an especially great experience, as the underwater visibility is crystal clear. In the coral forests, you can see a variety of species, including turtles, clownfish, angelfish, wrasses, and even dolphins. After sunbathing, the many casuarina trees along the beach provide plenty of shade and offer children a great climbing paradise. During the week, this beach is mostly visited by tourists, while on weekends, many locals meet for picnics. Those who like to travel light to the beach will find several beach bars on-site, all selling delicious snacks. Blue Bay Beach thus offers the complete package and is, for us, one of the most beautiful beaches in Mauritius, not only because of its underwater world. Our tip: Since this beach is near the Blue Bay Marine Park, a glass-bottom boat ride is highly recommended here. Additionally, a day trip by catamaran to Île Aux Cerfs is a great option!
6. Pointe d’Esny Beach – near Mahébourg

Strong winds, gentle waves, and a breathtaking view of the mountain scenery–Pointe d’Esny Beach is located near Mahébourg, just like Blue Bay Beach. However, if you prefer a quieter setting, this is a much better choice than Blue Bay Beach, as the chances of finding an almost deserted beach are quite good, even on weekends. Due to its eastern location, it is not as hot here as on the beaches located in the west. This is partly due to the east wind, which is also perfect for kitesurfing. Underwater, about a kilometer away, there is a coral reef that not only keeps sharks but also strong waves from reaching the beach. Our tip: Mahébourg is a refreshingly untouristic town and is only about a twenty-minute walk from Pointe d’Esny Beach. If you want to skip the walk, you can opt for a taxi or the bus connection.
7. Gris Gris Beach – near Soulliac

Dark rocks, white sand, and wild nature–at the southernmost point of the island lies Gris Gris Beach. Due to its location–and because there are no coral reefs here–the waves crash unrestrained and with full force against the rugged stone coast. This creates a phenomenon that can be observed very close to Gris Gris Beach. Right next door is La Roche qui pleure. If you venture onto the rock ledge there, you can see how the waves break with tremendous force against the coast and spray over the rock in a fountain. The spectacle of the “weeping rock” can only be observed at high tide, so patience may be required. But it’s worth the wait, as the natural spectacle is truly impressive and makes Gris Gris Beach one of the most beautiful beaches in Mauritius. Our tip: Due to the strong waves and rough rocks in the water, this beach is not suitable for swimming and snorkeling. However, a visit is still worthwhile, especially if combined with a beach walk or a short hike.

8. Île Aux Cerfs Beach – on the neighboring island

Deserted beaches and an almost unreal beauty–Île aux Cerfs offers what many imagine as typical Mauritius. Long a true insider tip, the increasing popularity of this island’s idyll has not diminished its charm. The small paradise is accessible from Mauritius in just a few minutes with various providers. On the coast near Mahébourg, there are many providers offering extensive excursion packages. For example, you can book a paragliding flight and dinner directly with the speedboat transfer. If you want to skip all the frills and save costs, you should opt for a catamaran or a simple wooden boat. The latter costs barely more than ten euros. Our tip: Once on the small island, many people make a serious mistake: they settle down without hesitation where the boat dropped them off. Since all the boats head to the same spots and bays, sharing is inevitable. However, with a bit more initiative, you can have all the small bays and beaches of this island to yourself! It is highly recommended to simply set off and explore the island.
9. St. Felix Beach – a true insider tip

Few people, many corals, and true relaxation–this beach evokes a Robinson Crusoe feeling. Its untouched nature makes it extremely popular among the few who are even aware of this beach–and for several reasons. Located between Souillac and Bel Ombre, there is unusually little hotel and restaurant presence near St. Felix Beach. This is certainly one of the reasons why so few people have this beach on their radar. Due to its pristine nature and because it is so rarely visited, an unusually large number of corals grow here. Therefore, and because of the strong currents, extreme caution is advised when swimming. Fortunately, this does not deter from enjoying a round of beach volleyball followed by a long sunbath! Numerous trees provide shade and a beautiful contrast to the vibrant color of the water. Our tip: Due to the lack of snack bars, be sure to bring enough provisions. Also, it’s worth bringing a diving mask to get a close-up view of the corals at one of the most beautiful beaches in Mauritius.
