Tiruvannamalai attracts pilgrims and travelers from around the world, enchanting them with an almost intangible sense of otherworldliness. Our author Anna Wengel tried the ten-day Vipassana meditation near the city at the end of 2016 and came to know and love the Indian city. For TRAVELBOOK, she has compiled a list of things worth seeing and experiencing.

Tiruvannamalai is a particularly spiritual center in India. Whether you’re just looking around or diving into the various satsangs, Vipassanas, and more, the city is located in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, in the south or southwest of the country. You might know it as the city with the towers, as the massive Arunachalesvara Temple rises far above the city’s rooftops. The best way to reach Tiruvannamalai is via the nearest major airport, which is in Chennai. From there, you can continue by taxi or bus. But as always, it depends on where you’re coming from. Generally, taxis and buses are the most common modes of travel in India.

All tips and inspirations from this article are also available to listen to in the following podcast episode of “In 5 Minutes Around the World.”

See Mount Arunachala

The city of Tiruvannamalai lies at the foot of Mount Arunachala. The mountain is sacred in Hinduism because it is said that the god Shiva appeared there to Brahma and Vishnu in a column of flame. As if to prove it, the Shiva attribute Trishula, the trident, stands prominently at the mountain’s peak. My travel companions and I hiked up the mountain, which was strenuous and definitely very warm. But it was worth it. For one, we had very close encounters with monkeys eager to share our lunch. And it was impressive to look down from the mountain’s peak at the city, barely visible through the smog. It had a very otherworldly feel–something I often experienced in Tiruvannamalai.

Go with the Flow

… and immerse yourself in city life. This means simply wandering around and following the orange-clad sadhus with their white-red-yellow painted faces or watching the chaotic traffic maneuver around the wandering cows. Or observing the masses of pilgrims, whose colorful clothing and otherworldly expressions give the city an almost surreal atmosphere. Be sure to take a break in one of the typical small tea houses along the way.

Vipassana, the Ten-Day Meditation

We came to Tamil Nadu for our planned Vipassana. Vipassana is a ten-day meditation where you go to a Vipassana center and do nothing but meditate all day. You can imagine how intense that is. For me, it was definitely one of the most intense things I’ve done and experienced. But it’s worth it. Really.

I did Vipassana near Tiruvannamalai, specifically at Dhamma Arunachala. It’s not a secret tip in the field, but it’s recommended. The center offers a very authentic Vipassana experience. It’s certainly tougher than in Western centers, but I found it exciting to do it there–sleeping on uncomfortable wooden cots with more than twenty women under one roof, with only the bare essentials for washing and minimalist food.

Visit Temples and Ashrams

There are numerous temples and ashrams in and around Tiruvannamalai. The Sri Ramana Ashram is one of the most famous attractions in Tiruvannamalai. Since the city is a pilgrimage site and spiritual center of India, I suggest you explore the many offerings in the city and perhaps attend a satsang or find a suitable yoga studio from the many available.

Simple Eats Instead of Fine Dining

Street stalls and simple local restaurants are almost always good in Tiruvannamalai. If many locals are there, it’s generally a good sign. Like in many places in India, Tiruvannamalai also has a so-called “German Bakery.” It doesn’t really have anything German, but usually offers delicious pastries and other food, reasonably good coffee, and often a bit of peace away from the hustle and bustle.

Stay Around the Arunachaleshwara Temple

If you’re looking for a hotel in Tiruvannamalai, you should check out the area around the massive Arunachaleshwara Temple. It’s a relatively good location, as the temple is quite central and one of the things you want to see in Tiruvannamalai anyway, being one of the main attractions. Honestly, we drove into the city quite aimlessly, more or less into the center, and asked around at guesthouses and inns until we found something suitable. It worked well and was quite spontaneous–and generally possible in India.
