Whether for a long weekend or the next vacation, Europe’s cities entice with history, culture, architecture, and gastronomy. But which destinations are particularly popular with travelers? Readers of the travel magazine “Condé Nast Traveller” have once again chosen their favorite European cities. Here, we reveal which city took first place in 2026 and other destinations that are among the favorites.
For the Readers’ Choice Awards, readers of “Condé Nast Traveller” rate their travel experiences each year. Various aspects of a destination are considered, including gastronomy, hotels, shopping opportunities, and attractions. According to the magazine, more than 200 cities were available for the current Europe ranking. The placements are based on the average satisfaction scores of the participants.
Overall, the top 10 saw significant changes compared to the previous year: Paris, Istanbul, Amsterdam, and Monte-Carlo are four cities that newly entered the top group. At the same time, Munich, the only German city, disappeared from the top 20–the Bavarian capital had ranked sixth last year.
Rank 1: Paris, France

Paris is Europe’s new number one. The French capital wasn’t even in the top 20 in 2025 and now jumps straight to the top of the rankings. According to “Condé Nast,” several developments in recent years may have contributed to this: After years of cleaning, swimming in the Seine is now possible again, and the newly renovated Grand Palais has reopened its doors. Alongside classics like the Eiffel Tower, Louvre, and Notre-Dame, there are always new reasons for Paris enthusiasts to visit.

Rank 2: Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul contributes to the biggest changes in this year’s ranking. The Turkish metropolis wasn’t in the top 20 in 2025 and now lands directly in second place. Travelers particularly appreciate the city’s unique location between Europe and Asia, as well as the mix of history, culture, and modern city life. From historic buildings to bustling markets and a diverse hotel scene, Istanbul offers a wide range of experiences and impressions.

Rank 3: Valletta, Malta

After ranking first last year, Valletta lands in third place in 2026–the Maltese capital remains one of Europe’s most popular cities. Visitors particularly appreciate the UNESCO World Heritage-listed old town with its baroque buildings, narrow streets, and mighty fortifications. Add to that short distances, Mediterranean flair, and constant views of the Mediterranean Sea.

It’s also notable who is no longer represented: Munich, which was in sixth place in 2025 and the only German city in the ranking, did not make it into the top 20 European cities this year. Instead, several new candidates have entered the list: including Amsterdam in fourth place and Monte-Carlo (Principality of Monaco) in tenth place.
