Although this trendy area is no longer a hidden gem, it still offers an escape from the typical tourist crowds of Rome’s city center. The neighborhood is so colorful and diverse that you can easily spend the entire day here. Our author visited and immediately fell in love with Trastevere–here are the best tips for this vibrant district.
La Dolce Vita on the Other Side of the Tiber
Once you reach the western side of Rome, the authentic district of Trastevere reveals itself. Here, you’ll find what you might imagine as a piece of old Rome–just in a trendier version. Life unfolds in a relaxed atmosphere, with chatter and laughter all around. Trastevere is also known as Rome’s creative district, offering something new to discover at every corner. It’s easy to lose yourself in the charming streets, encountering street musicians, artists, vintage shops, and of course, good food, the best gelato shops, and laid-back bars.
Dining Like the Romans
Many traditional trattorias and osterias are found in Trastevere, enticing visitors with the most delicious Italian traditional dishes. Ice cream fans will also be delighted, as gelato shops line the streets. We tried Il Gelato di Santa Maria at Piazza di Santa Maria and found it delicious. This is also where you’ll find the Basilica of Santa Maria–one of Rome’s oldest churches.

Aperitivo and the Vibrant Nightlife
Trastevere is also perfect for an aperitivo. Whether in daylight or under string lights, the trendy district invites you to linger. The drink selection is vast–leading the way, of course, is Italy’s cult drink: Aperol Spritz. A bar we frequented that offers really good drinks at fair prices is located at Piazza di San Calisto and is called Samovar. This is also where you’ll find the lively Bar San Calisto.
Trastevere is one of the most popular nightlife districts in Rome, and if you’re looking to dance, you’ve found the right place. A popular nightclub offering (jazz) live music is called Alcazar Live. On the day we wanted to visit, however, a DJ was playing. So we opted for the bar On The Rox, which transforms into a dance bar with wild pop songs at night. Especially in the warm months, life in Trastevere mainly takes place outdoors: Everywhere, young people sit, drink, laugh, and enjoy the evening.
On some weekend evenings, live music is also played at the well-known Piazza Trilussa, and people dance. During the day, some artists sell their works here. It’s just unclear when exactly live musicians appear. When we showed up on a Friday evening, countless people were waiting for the outdoor party, but the music was delayed.

Strolling Between Boutiques and Vintage Shops
As you wander through the streets, you’ll quickly find yourself in small boutiques and vintage shops that invite you to browse. There are fewer clothing chains here, but rather individual stores with unique products. Local designers also offer homemade jewelry and ceramics. The vintage shops are small but charming. We visited the Twice Vintage Shop and the 8 MG Vintage Store. For music lovers, there was also a record store we visited. It’s called Il Mangiadischi Roma and has a vinyl selection in all styles.
Italian Flair and Trendy Lifestyle
Trastevere is the perfect district for a mix of Roman authenticity and modern flair. You arrive and can simply let yourself drift–preferably with an ice cream in hand, a glass of spritz on the table, and a good pasta or pizza in sight. On your next visit to Rome, a detour to this romantic trendy district is definitely a must!
