There are many beautiful cities worldwide, each with its own unique charms. However, particularly appealing are those places known for their exceptional warmth, making a stay truly special. For many travelers, these “inner values” play a central role in choosing their next destination. Therefore, it might be interesting to look at those international destinations that, according to verified guest reviews on Booking.com, have made it to the list of the world’s most hospitable cities. The ranking is based on authentic user reviews evaluated by the platform as part of its Traveller Review Awards–an accolade for particularly well-rated partners in the tourism sector. The top spot in this category goes to a picturesque town in Italy.
How the World’s Most Hospitable City Was Determined
The foundation of the Traveller Review Awards is the evaluation of around 370 million verified guest reviews. Booking.com considers only genuine experiences from travelers who have stayed at an accommodation. To qualify for the award, accommodations must have between three and ten reviews and an average score of at least 8 out of 10. Cities and regions are then assessed based on the proportion of such highly rated accommodations relative to the total number of listed accommodations. To ensure only destinations with a broad data base are considered, at least 200 accommodations in a city or region must meet the criteria. This creates a reliable overview of cities worldwide where travelers frequently have positive experiences with hosts and feel welcome.
The World’s Most Hospitable City Is in Italy
Italy is generally considered hospitable. However, in heavily visited tourist destinations like Rome or Venice, warmth can sometimes get lost in the hustle and bustle. This wouldn’t be surprising, as not all visitors always behave impeccably.
Also interesting: Instances where tourists really misbehaved
In Montepulciano (see large photo above), which has not yet been overrun by international tourists, hospitality is perceived as particularly authentic and palpable. For this special atmosphere, the Tuscan town with around 14,000 residents received the title of the world’s most hospitable city in the Traveller Review Awards. Montepulciano captivates with Renaissance palaces, medieval architecture, and narrow cobblestone streets leading to the Piazza Grande. Perched high on a hill, Montepulciano also offers breathtaking views of the surrounding vineyards–the city has gained worldwide fame through the renowned Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Overall, culinary delights are not neglected: Travelers praise the city’s culinary traditions on Booking.com, from hand-rolled Pici pasta to hearty specialties like Bistecca alla Fiorentina.

Second and Third Most Hospitable Cities
Magong, Taiwan, a lively port town on the west coast of Penghu Island, takes second place among the most hospitable cities. Historical temples and traditional architecture meet colorful markets and a picturesque coastal landscape here. A highlight is Zhongyang Old Street, lined with local shops and restaurants. The surrounding fishing villages and farms also invite exploration. Magong is particularly appreciated for its authentic local hospitality.
In third place is San Martín de los Andes, Argentina. According to Booking.com, the city impresses with its friendly and personal atmosphere–the helpful, open residents significantly contribute to making guests feel welcome. San Martín de los Andes is located on the tranquil shore of Lake Lácar, surrounded by the peaks of the Andes. Cozy streets with wooden houses, lakeside cafes, and small craft shops invite leisurely strolls. Outdoor enthusiasts appreciate the nearby Lanín National Park with ancient forests, rivers, and volcanic landscapes for hiking, kayaking, and wildlife watching. In winter, Cerro Chapelco offers excellent conditions for skiing and snowboarding.

Germany Not Represented Here–But Still Hospitable
The list of the world’s most hospitable cities unfortunately lacks a German contender. Nevertheless, we need not hide in international comparison. As the very same Traveller Review Awards have shown–incidentally, the 14th since their introduction–Germany plays an important role in hospitality overall. For instance, the state of Saxony secured a spot among the world’s most hospitable regions. In total, 111,685 German “partners” were recognized, meaning businesses offering services to travelers–from accommodations to car rentals. This places Germany fourth worldwide, with only France, Spain, and Italy ahead of us.
